Garrett Leight & Thierry Lasry Proving That Opposites Really Do Attract

By Alyse Mier Alexander Wang and H&M, Karl Lagerfeld and Cara Delevingne are among some of our favorite pairings made in fashion. Bound to soon join the list of collaborations made in fashion heaven are Garrett Leight and Thierry Lasry. Recently, the eyewear designers have been working together on a series of limited edition collections. For the third and final capsule the designers wanted to create frames that would showcase their individual creativity, design and would pay homage to their beloved cities, Los Angeles and Paris. The end result is two separate frames: The Thierry Lasry x Garrett Leight is a combination of Lasry’s D-frame design with a touch of Leight’s classic and retro influence. The second frame Garrett Leight x Thierry Lasry uses Leight’s rounded shape with Lasry’s layered details and removable clips, which gives these frames a futuristic feel. “Thierry and myself have always had a profound respect for each other’s originality,” says Leight. “We come from a similar background, in which we grew up in the business, and feel like we have really created our own paths. There’s a symmetry there that we can’t get from collaborating with anyone else. Working together has been such a rewarding experience.” This final collection is priced between $450-$495 and will be available for purchase at select fine retailers worldwide as well as on garrettleight.com on August 1st.

Sunglass Hut: Electrify Your Summer

By Alyse Mier Summer is the season when our hair gets lighter, our skin gets darker and days turn into nights before we know it. This past Sunday, Sunglass Hut’s Electrify Your Summer tour made its stop in Miami. The 13-hour bash featured all of this summer’s best party essentials: live music, refreshing cocktails, local food, a fun game of volleyball, a pop up shop with the best shades from Sunglass Hut and an energy absorbing dance floor. The innovative dance floor would sensor the energy from the crowd’s dancing and light up the crowd-powered sun. The more you danced, the brighter the sun, bringing the much-needed sunshine to the gloomy Miami day. Make sure to stay shaded on the brightest of days and electrify your summer with Sunglass Hut.

Spring Fashion Trends

By Katie Jackson  This spring season, fashion is kicked up a notch with a modern twist on style favorites. The free-spirited bohemian style, or boho-chic, is now presented as evening wear, featuring stunning, loosely fitted silhouettes and draped fabrics in the form of long, formal gowns. New iterations of America’s favorite textile, denim, dominated the runways while suede, with a slight seventies vibe, makes a huge comeback. Whether you are looking to amp up your wardrobe or create a new spin on a style staple, we’ve gathered the top spring 2015 trends that have made the biggest impact straight from the runways of New York, Paris, London, and Milan. FRINGE Fresh off the runways of Proenza Schouler and Emilio Pucci, fringe is making a huge splash in the spring 2015 style scene. Wear it in the form of a flapper girl-inspired dress, a jacket, or shorts adorned with long, unexpected streamers. Fringed Dress by H&M HM.com / $39.95               BOHEMIAN CHIC As seen on the Valentino, Vera Wang, and Joseph Altuzarra runways, the already romantic look has been transformed into something even more spectacular. But while refined pinstripes, in any color, will always be in style, the design on cropped pants and trousers is a must this season. Pants by Ann Taylor AnnTaylor.com / $98           DENIM Denim is having a major style moment, and Alexa Chung for AG Jeans is at the forefront. The British style icon teamed up with the luxury denim brand to create a collection comprised of dresses, tops, and high-waisted jeans. Denim also commanded attention on the spring 2015 runways, with colorful and bedazzled jeans offered by Dolce and Gabbana and chic, mod dresses by Bottega Veneta. The Pixie – Lightsome by Alexa Chung for AG Jeans AGJeans.com / $325       THE TOTE The beloved tote never goes out of style. Signature Exotic Embossed Mini Bucket Bag by Ann Taylor AnnTaylor.com / $118     SUEDE Gone are the days where leather is among the most worn fabrics of the stylish and fashionable. Suede has returned, and it’s here to stay. Offered in a seventies-inspired yet updated aesthetic in the form of dresses, skirts, and tops in subdued colors, suede is quickly reclaiming its place as one of the most coveted fabrics. LXR & CO: Coveted Luxury

BY KATIE JACKSON Photography by IMANI OGDEN LXR & Co. is a dream turned reality for those who love upscale accessories. Carrying a carefully curated selection of vintage hand- bags and other highly coveted accessories from the top fashion houses in the world, it is no surprise that the store has over two hundred thousand members online alone. What started as a small boutique in Montreal, Canada has now expanded to the U.S., bringing a new level of luxury to the accessory obsessed. With locations in Beverly Hills, Manhattan, and Long Island, LXR & Co. now plans to expand to cities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. And, with much an- ticipation, a location in Miami is next on the list. In 2008, LXR & Co. opened its doors to a very small clientele in a little boutique in Queen Mary, Montreal. Traveling to international fashion houses to acquire a superior level of stock, including handbags from Chanel, Dior, Fendi, Prada, and Ferragamo, LXR & Co. earned a reputation for carrying accessories that were of the highest quality. In 2012, the boutique decided to launch a flagship store in Beverly Hills, California. “When we first opened our store, of course, we wanted to sell, but we also wanted to buy,” says corporate retail leader Sam Gebran. “We thought Beverly Hills would be a great place to get our hands on some of those really great, rare pieces.”And they were right.Adding to their already superior collection, the Beverly Hills lo- cation quickly skyrocketed LXR & Co. to the top. Not only did the store catch the attention of famous locals, such as model Joanna Krupa and Shahs of Sunset star Golnesa “GG” Gharachedaghi, celebrity stylists and personal shoppers became regulars. “We work with personal stylists for the Kardashians,” says Gebran. The attention accumulated further after an LXR & Co. location was opened in Manhattan. The Manhattan location started the concept of the Birkin Bar, an eye-catching display of different designs of the highly sought-after Hermès Birkin bag. The store also began to display the popu- lar hand-painted Louis Vuitton trunks from artist Mike Frederiqo. “He was the one that started the luxury cartoon trend,” says Gebran. The unique displays attracted famous fashion bloggers, such as Chiara Ferragni of “The Blonde Salad” and Aimee Song of “Song of Style,” who helped make LXR & Co. mainstream. Now, LXR & Co. appeals to a wide-range of customers seeking to own a piece of swoon-worthy vintage. The store hopes to continue to bring customers exceptional collections of accessories by expanding to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Paramus, New Jersey; and eventually Miami. “We did a pop up and wear every happy with Miami,” says Gebran.“We want to find a good location, because the Miami clientele is similar to BeverlyHills. It’s a very luxurious environment.” For more information, please visit www.lxrco.com  Click here to view post on the 2015 March/April issue.

Orianne Collins Jewellery: Glamorous Design with a Cause

By Katie Jackson Orianne Collins-Mejjati plays many roles, including an active philanthropist, insightfully creative designer, and most importantly, a mother of three young children. She fuses all three of these roles into her jewelry line, Orianne Collins Jewellery. Now with a boutique located in the burgeoning Design District, her customers are given an eclectic selection of carefully designed pieces that are both timelessly elegant and trendy, all while supporting a profoundly meaningful cause. Collins-Mejjati discovered her love for design in 2003 after working with different brands on special collaborations for the Little Dreams Foundation, the philanthropic organization that she co-founded with ex-husband Phil Collins. With the enormous success of a charm bracelet she had co-designed with Van Cleef & Arpels, she knew that it was time to branch out on her own. “I always wanted to be a fashion designer, and this project made me think that this is something that I really want to do. So I started my own company in 2006.” Inspired by everything around her, Collins-Mejjati can often be found with a pen and sketchbook creating her next piece. “I’m inspired by my travels, by my friends, by the people around me. I don’t want to miss anything. Sometimes it just happens in the middle of the night and I have to have my crayons and start to sketch.” This inspiration wholly translates into her line, with specific destinations even influencing entire collections. After witnessing the beautiful architec- ture in Morocco, Collins-Mejjati was motivated to create her Tales collection. “It’s like the magic from my travels,” she says. Offering a variety of intricately designed rings, bracelets, earrings, and necklaces for women, Collins-Mejjati also provides pieces for men and children. “I have children, and I create a lot of pieces for them. They test the jewelry, and I know it’s unbreakable. With kids it has to be unbreakable!” With children’s collections filled with adorable charm, like the Glitter and Yummylicious collections, there are plenty of pieces that would make any child’s heart melt. For men, Collins-Mejjati created collections that include sophisticated rings and cufflinks. “Men need some nice jewelry, so I try to offer them some- thing original.” Even with the tremendous success of her line, Collins-Mejjati is always determined to give back. In addition to co-founding and chairing the Little Dreams Foundation, she makes sure that many of the proceeds from her line go directly to the organization. “I create and donate a lot of pieces for auctions, and one hundred percent of the proceeds go to the Little Dreams Foundation.” Collins-Mejjati is confident that Miami is the place to grow her jewelry line and foundation, even opening her boutique in the heart of the up- and-coming Design District. “I think it is going to be the place to be. It’s going to be like SoHo in New York—how it was not very well known, but then became this hip place to go.” When customers enter her boutique, Collins-Mejjati wants to ensure that they feel welcome and know that there this is a piece of jewelry for them. “Everyone is my target customer, and I try to make pieces of jewelry that will reach everybody.” In developing a growing brand that promotes and engages in philanthropy while simultaneously making customers—women, men, and children—feel special, Collins-Mejjati has surely achieved her goal. Orianne Collins Jewellery is located in the Design District at 90 Northeast 39th Street, Miami FL, 33137. To purchase or view Orianne Collins Jewellery online, visit oriannecollins.com. A Look Back: The Most Iconic Bags of 2013

2013 was a year of incredible moments: Beyoncé dropped a bomb on us, aka her Visual Album, without so much as a peep – Poof PR minions, be gone! Miley had a mental breakdown in front of millions of people via the VMAs; but perhaps the most memorable moments reside in the form of a woman’s handbag. That’s right, forget the celebrities – show us the bags! We are here to bring you the most iconic bags of 2013! 1. The Chanel Hula Hoop Bag: Mr. Lagerfeld makes no mistake of gracing us with only the best in outrageously fabulous designs and controversial runway shows. That’s why it was no surprise, when the “hand-bag”, intended for the beach, in the shape of a full on hula hoop came swaying down the catwalk for Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection. This oversized Chanel-O, however not for sale to the public, was made in smaller versions for the trend-obsessed and woven-leather connoisseurs. The likes of this behemoth is sure to hang from the walls alongside Picasso and Van Gough. As impractical as it may be, we applaud Karl for his ceaseless flare for the theatrics!   2. All things Charlotte Olympia: Charlotte Olympia first stepped onto the scene in 2007 and has been serving as fashion’s comic relief ever since. Although we would love to pick just one of Charlotte’s wacky creations, inspired by the 1940s in all of its glorious kitschiness, we simply cannot! The English born designer can make anything into your night’s clutch, from a clock to a gummie bear – you name it, she’ll make it! Keep the laughs coming, Charlotte dear!   3. The Celine Trapeze Bag: Perhaps the bag that made the biggest splash this year was Phoebe Philo’s love-child – the Trapeze Bag. We all either have it or lust for it; either way it has been the top of our credit card-maxing agendas! Not only are the consumers gobbling every inch of this bag up, but every fellow designer, as well! Copycats like Philip Lim and to Alexander Wang are showing their appreciation by adding similar styles to their collections. You must have done something right, Phoebe! MJ BARTON – A Girl We Can’t Help but “Pick” Out of the Crowd

By Reagan Lightsey Photo Credit: Crafted by light Summer Issue 2012   When I met MJ Barton for coffee on Lincoln Road, I had an idea of what I was expecting; but, when I sat down with the smart, ambitious—not to mention downright pretty—Chicago native and creator of Electric Picks, I quickly found out that she isn’t your run-of-the-mill trendy jewelry designer. A graduate of Arizona State University, MJ got a job (by accident, no less) in the Public Relations department at Ocean Drive Magazine. From there, she began working with and eventually planning and directing charity events throughout Miami. RL: “So, from your own event planning company to jewelry design…did you always know this was what you eventually wanted to do?” MJB: “No, I actually—I know this sounds crazy—I had a dream about a guitar pick in a bracelet while I was living in Miami. That’s when I decided to move to New York and pursue jewelry design.” RL: “That’s a pretty brave move—just going for it like that…” MJB: “I know! But, I thought, for fashion that’s really where you have to be, LA or New York.” RL: “But you like to move around a lot, right?” MJB: “I do. I like to say I have led a bit of a gypsy lifestyle simply because I’ve lived a number of places in a pretty short period of time—Chicago, Arizona, Ireland, Miami, and now New York.” RL: “I read somewhere that you grew up playing the piano…so why the guitar pick as the driving force of your jewelry?”   MJB: “I have a mutual love for jewelry and music…I played the piano for eleven years, but I have to say the guitar is my favorite instrument.” RL: “Do you play?” MJB: “Ha-ha! I took lessons for four years, but I wasn’t that good,” she added, probably all-too modestly. RL: “Who are your musical influences? Who inspires you?” MJB: “I love Bruce Springsteen and The Roots—I think they’re such amazing musicians! And Carlos Santana is my favorite guitarist; he’s amazing! But I really love music in general: classic rock, jazz, and hip-hop music—they are all part of a universal language that speaks to everyone.” MJ takes a sip of coffee and the rows of beaded, guitar pick-accented bracelets shift down her arm. The edgy jewelry takes on a cool, sophisticated, rocker-chic look on her tiny wrist. In my mind’s eye I begin to envision everyone from Kate Moss to Keith Richards sporting the crystallite, skull-laden pieces. RL: “So…back to your big move… you just up and moved to New York; what was that experience like—working to break into a pretty tough industry?” MJB: “Ok, well, I moved in May and I had my first sale in July—” RL: “You mean LAST May? And you already have Victoria’s Secret Angels and pro-football players (Nina Agdal and the Miami Dolphin’s own tight end Anthony Fasano, just to name a few) wearing your jewelry?” MJB: “Well, it was completely organic growth. It was sort of serendipitous the way that people came into my life. They all taught me so much about the industry along the way. And I began to take classes. Also, I began selling the bracelets on FAB.com.  That’s where Urban Outfitters saw me.” RL: “Tell me about Urban Outfitters. What was your reaction when they picked up your line?” MJB: “Oh, I was completely floored. We just launched Electric Picks at the end of September. Urban Outfitters said they wanted orders in time for Christmas. Then they sold out! They just recently reordered, so we will continue to work with them.” RL: “That’s pretty huge. Where do you see the line going—a.k.a., what can we expect out of Electric Picks?” MJB: “Of course I’d like to see the line expand…” RL: “I for one would love to see you do t-shirts eventually—” MJB: “Wow… (MJ laughs) Maybe? What you can expect is the eventual expansion to necklaces.” RL: “I can’t wait!”—And I seriously can’t, because I am already in love with the bracelets’ rocker-chic vibe—“My favorite so far is the Joplin (black beading with a hot pink skull and a fleur-de-lis guitar pick). MJB: “Really?!” (MJ grins and reaches into her bag.) “That’s awesome, because that is just like the one I brought you!” And this girl is for real! She reaches across the table and hands me what has now become one of my very favorite accessories—which, I have literally worn every other day since our interview: the I-WANT-CANDY black onyx bracelet. It’s a great example of what her line stands for: edgy, modern, fashion-forward conversation pieces. So, if you’re like us and simply can’t wait to get your hands on some “Rock n’ Roll for Your Wrist,” as MJ puts it, you can find her collection at Zoe NYC at 19th and Collins or at Therapy and the W Hotel. Otherwise, you can check out the full line at www.electricpicks.com. Either way, these pieces will certainly help you be “pick[ed]” out of the crowd.

BEV’S BEADZ, a Treasure waiting to be Discovered.

By Sandra Mateu Artist and creator of BEV’S BEADZ, Beverly Moore, brings to the world a recreation of past-life in jewelry. Her passion for designing her unique pieces is rooted in antique Trade beads. A practice, dating back to the end of the fifteenth century, when the Portuguese arrived on the coast of West Africa to exploit its resources. The history behind each piece, the exchange, and the designs convey the originality and richness of her work. Moore is a collector of ancient treasures and a creator of new adventures. BEV’S BEADZ includes hand-crafted jewelry accessories for men and women created in a free spirit. Moore’s pieces may be similar, but never identical. The jewelry comprises rich dessert hues and materials such as Lapis, Coral, Jasper, metals, and beads of wood, bone, and glass. Each piece features hand-sculpted clay beads inset with a Turquoise. Men’s pieces include bracelets and necklaces. Some models such as Element, Fossil Fish, Apache, and The Bounty can be found by itself or as a collection with its matching necklace. Other designs come in only bracelets or necklaces such as the Karma bracelet with Skulls and Prayer beads or the Ra necklace, which represents the sun God. BEV’S BEADZ Women include a variety of bracelets, necklaces, anklets, and earrings. An amazing piece is the stunning bracelet/necklace called Kaleidoscope as the one used on model Monica Carreros on location with Miami Shoot Magazine’s production team. The Kaleidoscope is an arrangement of hundreds of vibrant blue seed beads that make a 54 inch wrap bracelet with stripped chevrons, clay beads, and copper. Other pieces include the Energy bracelet with minerals, stones, and metals, a beautiful Rain anklet made of Turquoise or a gorgeous pair of Harvest earrings with Amber and Jasper. The tradition of using beads that once started with the protection against uncontrollable events, a sign of status, or the enhancement of beauty still alive today. Tiia Design

Tiia Mandell of Tiia Design Interviewed by Yuliya Jade Winter issue 2010       YJ: How did you discover your aspiration to be a jewelry and accessory designer? TM: After working with several Fashion Designers in New York City (Carolyne Roehm, Adrienne Vittadini and St. John), and later working in the Interior Design field in Los Angeles, I decided to focus my creative energies on jewelry and clutches, and have continued to evolve it to where I am today! I actually started designing and making creations before I was a teenager. This interest continued and I eventually attended art and design schools (Skidmore College, Parsons School of Design, The Art Students’ League in New York), and later earned a degree in Interiors from UCLA. YJ: D: Do you remember the first jewelry piece you’ve designed? (describe it)? TM: The creation that more or less launched Tiia was a clutch covered in turquoise nuggets with jasper accents and lined with a muted turquoise and taupe zebra patterned fabric. Whenever I went out with this clutch, I would get so many comments and offers to purchase it that I decided to start my business. Since I love stones and fabrics in all their different colors, textures and shapes, I naturally started designing jewelry as well. YJ: How many pieces are in your collection now? TM: At any given time, I am likely to have about 40 necklaces and 15 clutches available for sale, as well as several other designs that are in progress at varying stages. They are one-of-a-kind and the collections are small, geared towards women who want something that expresses their own individuality. YJ: Where do you get your inspiration from? TM: A lot of my creative inspiration has come from traveling to some of the most interesting places in the world – be it Patagonia, London, Australia, Northern Africa or Hong Kong.  Through these life-enriching experiences, I have been immersed in different cultures, and inspired by what I have observed, be it a historical detail in a museum display, an architectural flourish on a building, or unique styles of dress worn by a local. YJ: Describe your designing process. Do you start with the materials or a drawing?  How do you go from an inspiration to the finished piece? TM: Usually, when I am struck with an idea, I sketch it out in my “process” sketch book. Frequently though, my ideas come to me while I am at the gym either on the treadmill or in spinning class. Even though I cannot sketch at that moment, I am able to visualize the design and “problem solve” how to actually construct it and bring it to life!  I am also constantly searching for stones based on their intrinsic beauty or uniqueness which in turn will drive the design process; I try to create something that is inspired by the elements themselves rather than force a design. You could say my approach to design comes from both directions. YJ: What are the most favorite accessories you’ve created and why? TM: My favorite piece is the turquoise nugget clutch (pictured) that I mentioned above. Not only is it a great looking bag to use with any outfit, I really enjoyed designing and creating this piece. My other favorites are some fun and whimsical coral pendants I have created using coral branches that I have found on the beaches in Miami to which I have added semi-precious stones. They are easy and light necklaces with just a bit of sophisticated sparkle; a wonderful reflection of Miami. They have been some of my most popular pieces. YJ: Are you working on any new designs that you’d like to tell us about? TM: I am in the midst of planning a trip to India including a visit to Jaipur, known as one of the gem centers of the world. So, I expect to be full of ideas for exciting new clutches and necklaces inspired by what I see! Visit Tiia Design at www.tiiadesign.com
