The Nordstrom Beauty Trend Show Amps Your Beauty Style

By Gisel Habibnejad On December 13th, a huge crowd gathered outside awaiting the doors to open at 8am for Nordstrom Merrick Park. Why would women across Miami wake up so early on a Saturday? The annual Nordstrom Beauty Trend Show, of course! Seats filled up quickly as everyone anxiously anticipated for the fashion show to begin. The beauty trend show opened with the lively and hilarious host, Nordstrom Beauty Director, Gilbert Vera. Soon after, beautiful models strutted down the runway with designer clothes ranging from Mara Hoffman, Clover Canyon, and Rebecca Taylor. These outfits centered on the Velvet Berry Lip beauty trend. The fall trend continues to grow in popularity as seen on celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Emma Watson, and Jessica Alba. The most notable of colors was MAC’s Pro Lipstick in Sin ($16) as seen on the cover photo for the event. Geir Ness, creator of Laila perfume – the essence of Norway, also made a special appearance to speak about the unique scent and gift set ($99) and spritz the floral scent across the audience. For the next segment of the beauty show, models showed-off their night eye shadow shades. Makeup brands included Trish McEvoy and LancĂŽme. The crowd favorite was easily the 5-Colour Eyeshadow Palette ($60) by Dior. The collection includes 11 different color combination palettes to choose from, all containing soft shades allowing for an easy day-to-night transition. Also seen on the models was Yves Saint Laurent’s Fusion Ink Foundation SPF 18 ($60). The lightweight formula was voted #1 by nationwide magazines and can be considered as the “freedom foundation” as it is ideal to prevent that cakey-makeup look. The models were adorned with Diane von Furstenberg, Kate Spade, and Just Cavalli. The last fall beauty trend showcased was sparkling accents. The beautiful makeup looks were the picture-perfect pop of detail for the fabulous outfits sported by the models. Designer brands included Vince Camuto, Helmut Lang, and Philip Lim. The most attention-grabbing item of all was the My Burberry Eau de Parfum ($95) now sold at Nordstrom Merrick Park Burberry beauty counter. The beautiful bottle is tied with an iconic trench coat inspired bow around the top. After the fantastic beauty show, attendees enjoyed the rest of their day at the beauty counters receiving free makeovers from brands such as Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, and Anastasia Beverly Hills – among the many others. Throughout the day, Nordstrom Beauty Stylists assisted event goers by handpicking the best makeup customized to their desired preferences. Beauty Stylist Juan Reyes shared his favorite brands and must-haves of the season. For cleansing and toning, his go-to product is La Prairie’s Cellular Cleansing Water for eyes and face ($90). With one wash, the product cleans all traces of makeup – without the use of water. In addition, you will immediately see improvement in your skin as you begin your path to anti-aging; healthy skin is always in-style. Juan also recommended the Tom Ford Perfume Sampler Collection sold only at Nordstrom Merrick Park. The sampler includes scents such as, Oud Wood and Jasmin Rouge for men and women, respectively. For all things beauty and fashion, it’s safe to say Nordstrom Merrick Park has the essentials to take care of every beauty need by all the best brands and stylists. Red Carpet Hair 2015 Predictions by CHI

By Gisel Habibnejad With red carpet season rapidly approaching, viewers anxiously await to see what the stars are wearing and the new beauty trends that will soon make their mark in the fashion world. Thankfully, CHI already made some predictions that we can swoon over until the first award show this Sunday.     “We will see romantic, soft waves with side parts for long and short hair,” says Tammy Mixon, Farouk Systems Global Board Artist and lead Hair Artist for Miss Universe. She uses BioSilk Silk Therapy and BioSilk Volumizing Therapy Texturizing Powder to achieve this look.                       One of the easiest and popular hair styles making its way on recent red carpets is the braid. It is the perfect way to complement a gorgeous gown to accomplish the “I didn’t have to try this hard to look this good” look. Lorena Garcia, Farouk Systems Creative Artist says, “waves will also dominate the award ceremonies – but will be sleek waves – nothing messy, as well as straight sleek looks, combed straight back or with a down the center part.”     Overall, I think it’s safe to say that when it comes to hair, simple yet elegant will always win this season.

365 Days of Summer

By Monica Guessous Summertime, the season of sun kissed skin, golden hair, icy drinks and dinner on the boardwalk. Wonderful memories are created during the hot summer months. We become one with nature, and try to enjoy everything the summer has to offer. Miami, of all places, should be the definition of summer. We are blessed with 365 days of sunshine, along with beautiful beaches, delicious food and wonderful people. However, having the sun on our side all year around, leaves us vulnerable to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. These rays are the cause of premature aging of the skin, dark spots, deep wrinkles and even skin cancer can happen over time. So how do we care for and protect our skin from our dear friend and skin’s enemy the Miami sun? Understanding the effect of the UVA and UVB rays on our skin, will help us understand and protect it from further damage, it’s never too late to start. UVA rays, enter the skins deepest layer called Dermis, they are the causes of premature aging of the skin. UVB rays cause skin cancer, sun allergies and sunburn, because they penetrate the upper layer of the skin (epidermis). Protecting our skin is a must, and sunscreen is our skin’s best friend. However, not all sunscreens are created equal. Cosmetics companies are constantly searching for new ways to improve their formula. One company in particular is challenging the traditional idea of sunscreen, by creating a drinkable sunscreen. Impressive! But does it work? Harmonized h2o UV Neutralizer, is the world’s first drinkable sunscreen. The company claims, drinking one teaspoon of Harmonized H2O UV neutralizer will give wearers a factor 30 protection. They go on by explaining, that their product works by molecules vibrating on skin, canceling UVA and UVB rays. Their product comes in two varieties, ‘tanning’ and ‘nontanning’.Theystate,thatharmonizedh2O UV Neutralizer tanning allows users to achieve a tan while being protected from harmful sun rays. We were very impressed with their claim and even more impressed, with the great reviews of their products on the web. The days of carrying a sunscreen bottle in our beach bag, might just be over. With the peace of mind of having our skin protected, we are left with much more to worry about. Like, having fun! Breast Augmentation: Which Implant Is Best For Me?

By Dr. Johnny Franco MD Breast augmentation was the most common cosmetic procedure performed by plastic surgeons in 2013 with almost 300,000 augmentations and this number continues to grow every year. It has become so popular as patients are extremely happy and the recovery is very easy. The hardest part of the process for women is deciding what implant size they wish to be after the augmentation. Patients most commonly say that they want to be the infamous “full C” or that they just want to be “natural but full.” These terms are not very descriptive and can mean a lot things to different people. I once had a patient tell me she wanted to be natural and then sent me a picture of Pamela Anderson as an example of what she wanted to look like after the surgery. There are several ways that I help patients decide which implant is best for them as no one implant is perfect for everyone. One of the benefits that women have today that was not available to them 10 years ago is the large range of options in implants. The first thing I have patients do when they are trying to decide on implants is actually try the implants on with bra and tank top. This gives patients a real feel for the size and weight of the actual implants. The newest method for helping patients decide on the correct implant is 3D imaging. This technology allows a patient to have her picture taken and then a virtual simulation is done so that the patient can see what they would look like with various implants. This is a great option if you don’t have a twin sister that has already had a breast augmentation as implants look different from patient to patient. The virtual technology allows the patient and surgeon to have a discussion about the look and size they desire after the procedure. The virtual simulations are available to patients after the consultation so that they can go back and look at the different virtual images for each size they are contemplating. Patients can view the images on their home computer, ipad or smart phone. Technology continues to make breast augmentation easier for patients. 3D imaging has improved the process for patients making the decision on what implant much easier. HAVE QUESTIONS? ASK DR. With Dr. Johnny Franco of Miami Plastic Surgery

A graduate of Beloit College with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Dr. Franco earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Texas Medity School of Medicine. There, he was chief resident from 2010-2011. In 2011, he completed additional training at Chan Gung Hospital in Taiwan with a focus on microsurgery primarily in cancer reconstruction, followed by a fellowship at Gent Univical Branch at Galveston. Dr. Franco served his residency in Plastic Surgery at Saint Louis University Hospital in Belgium where he specialized in breast reconstruction and fat grafting. Dr. Franco has an impressive history of publications and presentations and has received many academic achievement awards including the Walter S. Haven Prize, Elizabeth W. Souter Award and the Merck Index Award. Originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Dr. Franco is bilingual in English and Spanish. MSM: Tell us what inspired you to become a plastic surgeon? I was always interested in surgery and medicine growing up. Early on in medical school I thought that I wanted to do transplant surgery, however the more exposure I had to plastic surgery the more I loved it. Plastic surgery is such a broad field with endless potential. One of the things that I love about plastic surgery is that it is truly a combination of technical skill, knowledge and an art form. Every person is different and there is no one correct way to treat everyone. This individuality from patient to patient makes every day exciting and a new challenge. MSM: What are the newest procedures in plastic surgery? There are a couple of new procedures that have changed plastic surgery in the past few years. The first is fat grafting which has allowed us to sculpt the body in ways that we were never able to do before. It allows a plastic surgeon to remove fat from unwanted areas and enhance other areas. The body can be shaped as whole rather than just individual enhancements. It also can avoid the need for implants or other foreign materials such as fillers. Fat grafting has become extremely popular here in Miami for procedures like the Brazilian Butt lift because of the overall improvement women receive in their entire shape! The gummy bear breast implants have improved the results that plastic surgeons have been able to achieve in both breast augmentations and breast reconstruction. It gives patients more options to achieve the shape and size that they desire for their breasts. It is now possible to individualize every breast augmentation to the patient. Voluma is a new facial filler that lasts two years compared to the typical six to nine months that most other fillers currently last. It allows patients to decrease the number of visits to their plastic surgeon! MSM: What are facial fillers and Botox? The most important comment I can make about Botox and fillers is that patients need to be aware of what they are having injected into their body. As mentioned earlier make sure that the person injecting you truly has your best interest at heart. If what the person is telling you sounds to good to be true it probably is to good to be true. Unfortunately too often I see patients that have had silicone or biopolymer (or they have no idea what was injected) into their face or buttock and then they come in for treatment because the individual that injected them is nowhere to be found. There are a lot of great fillers on the market that will give you a safe and beautiful result so please do not do something that is going to cause lifelong problems by using products by non-certified physicians. Botox is a neuromodulator that is most commonly used to treat wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. When used correctly it can also be used to give patients a non-surgical brow lift as well. Fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Volume, Radiasse and so forth are most commonly used to rejuvenate and fill the lower two thirds of the face. The fillers replace the volume that people lose in their face to give them a more youthful refreshed appearance. They have become so popular because these procedures are done in the office with virtually no down time and they leave you looking refreshed and youthful. The popularity of Botox and fillers has come from the ease of the procedure and aesthetic enhancements. Many patients come in during their lunch hour to have their filler or Botox and can go back to work without any down time. MSM: Who is the perfect candidate for facial fillers such as Botox & Juvederm? Botox is perfect for anyone who is has started to notice wrinkles in their forehead and around their eyes. When done correctly Botox can give a very natural, smooth youthful appearance. Fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm are great for anyone who has started to notice that their face is sagging, deflated or just not as youthful in appearance as it once was. MSM: What are the best nonsurgical procedures that produce the most lasting results without going under the knife? Patient’s that get on a good skin care regimen early in life will thank themselves for it later on. Sunscreen is especially important in a city like Miami. The damage that we do to our skin in our youth will catch up with us eventually! Botox and fillers have become so popular because they give a very natural, but rejuvenated appearance without the need for surgery or down time. I tell patients to start with small amounts of these products, as they just want to enhance the great features that they already have that make them unique. The idea is just to maintain your beauty and not change your appearance. MSM: What questions should new patients who are interested in plastic surgery be asking themselves? They should seek out board certified plastic surgeons that can have open discussions with them. They should not be afraid to take a list of questions to their surgeon during the consultation. Patients should be

The Illamasqua Haunting

Whether we like it or not, the eve of Halloween is upon us. Ghost and ghouls will soon emerge from lawyer’s offices and photography studios where they lurk during the day, and terrorize the streets in their most capable yet outlandish disguises, leaving their day job behind for the night. In order to prep for such a wicked, confection-craze fright-fest, they flood into the Illamasqua counter at Bloomingdales in the Aventura Mall by the numbers. Illamasqua is a UK based make-up brand that has spread like an epidemic from the English Channel all the way to American shores, landing in homeland soil and bringing colorful individuality to cities like New York, New Jersey, Chicago and most recently, Miami. Every first Saturday of each month, the “movement” of a brand educates eager, make-up buffs on the ins and outs of proper application along with the use of each product (like their cruelty-free, synthetic brushes) by holding first-hand tutorials of tricks and tips to refine your once amateur beauty skills to expertise levels. In this week’s Beauty School Drop In class, the Illamasqua “creatives” schooled the “pupils” on how to make heads do a 360-degree turn while howling at the full moon light, or maybe just enjoying a signature Eyeball Martini at your best friend’s Monster Mania soiree, either way, Illamasqua has the “faces” that you need to be wearing on October’s most celebrated day of the dead. Little Lolita – Good for guises like geishas or flappers. Poison Ivy’s Evil Twin – Try this look for a playful peacock or a seductive serpent. The Queen of Darkness – Although this look could go with just about anything, we recommend pairing it with a racy cat suit or a Wicked Witch from the Southeast number.
