GOGO Benefit Concert: A Performance Dedicated to a Hopeful Future

By Michèle Bigler Guitars over Guns, better known as GOGO, is a praiseworthy organization that caters to at-risk children by providing them with after-school jam sessions, instruments and musical mentors, ultimately aiming at steering them away from gangs, guns and the like. The founder is local musician and Spam All Stars band member, Chad Bernstein, also crowned one of CNN’s heroes. A recent visit to one of the afternoon sessions at North Miami Middle School gave us insight into the inner workings of the exemplary foundation and its hands-on tactics which evidently produce direct results. The North Miami Middle School students can choose between rap, vocal, piano, guitar and the trumpet. They have ready mentors that coach them through the process and even encourage exploration between the instruments. One of the students, Jeremiah was taking his hand at the trombone and when asked why he had chosen the instrument he replied, “I wanted to try something new and different. I’ve already played all of the other instruments.” The curiosity that Jeremiah exuded clearly demonstrates that the program is working. Witnessing the students first hand only drew an inverted picture of the musician and his fruition from the core. One can truly observe how it all begins with practice and dedication. Every musician commences by repeatedly playing the same three notes until they reach perfection. These values translate to everyday life and establish a sense of perseverance and purpose in the students.  Xavier Gustave was welcoming with inquisitiveness and made everyone feel right at home. Later on, we were able to observe him flawlessly rap the words to his favorite Eminem song “I love the way you lie.” Afterwards, the ladies in vocal gleefully confirmed their dreams of becoming singers. There was a harmony in the room that is rarely seen in classrooms. Kids of all ages proved to be working together. Although the noise was standard for a middle school classroom, the pupils swiftly quieted down and paid close attention to Gene Gaylor’s lead. This is a program guided by gifted and passionate musicians looking to give our youth the opportunities that they should all have access to, it is a verifiable and zestful project worthy of the community’s support.  GOGO will be hosting a benefit concert entitled “Choose your Sound” at The Fillmore on Saturday, November 21, 2015 featuring local bands Locos por Juana and Tony Succar, hosted by NBC 6’s Roxanne Vargas. The concert is your chance to have a direct effect on our community and the future of South Florida’s students.  For more information on GOGO, please visit www.guitarsoverguns.org

Craig Robins: A Not So Secret Love Affair with Art

November-December Issue 2015 By Angela Betancourt Before they were turned into charming boutique hotels, before they were restaurants, before they gained worldwide fame and recognition, the Art Deco District was merely a series of run-down buildings facing an uncertain future. If it wasn’t for the vision and determination of a few pioneering individuals, who saw this historic district for its potential, the Miami Beach we know today would not exist. One of these visionaries is Craig Robins, a real estate developer, philanthropist, and art enthusiast that has made a massive impact in Miami’s real estate, culture, and art landscape. Robins is also the Founder and CEO of Dacra, a real estate company that is constantly propelling Miami into the future. Robins’ vision for the Art Deco District was unprecedented. He began investing in South Beach real estate in the 1980s and steadily restored iconic properties to their original grandeur. As the neighborhood began to thrive and flourish, Robins set his eyes across the bridge. He is the man behind the Miami Design District (MDD) which has become a famed neighborhood in its own right. Less than 30 years ago the MDD was the neglected area of the city you wouldn’t want to get caught in walking around at night. Today, the MDD is a destination that’s home to numerous restaurants, galleries, artists, luxury retail brands, and innovative businesses. “When we set out to revitalize and reinvent the District, our goal was to cultivate an atmosphere where creativity could flourish, regardless of its specific label or medium. These artistic endeavors are all vital components of the fabric of the Design District – the value systems informing each are remarkably similar, with an emphasis on craft, quality, and a profound commitment to expressing a creative vision,” he shared. One of the first things Robins and his team did was to bring back the element of furniture design in order to compete with a nearby business. The move paid off and as new buildings were created; heavy hitters in the design world began setting up showrooms. Robins also fostered an environment of creativity and innovation by providing artists with studio space. “As the neighborhood became known as a laboratory for creativity, we hosted events like the annual Art Loves Design party to celebrate those flourishing creative disciplines. We created public art installations by Marc Newson, Jose Bedia and Zaha Hadid among others,” he said. It wasn’t long before leading fashion brands took notice of the neighborhood’s new personality. The MDD soon welcomed Marni, Christian Louboutin, Maison Martin Margiela, and others. There are currently more than 50 luxury fashion brands in the neighborhood with brands like Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Isabel Marant, Loro Piana, Tod’s and Van Cleef & Arpels expected in 2016. “While the revitalization of the neighborhood began with a cultivation of design showrooms and art collections of international significance, fashion was always part of my vision for the Design District,” said Robins. While two of Miami’s most important neighborhoods were being physically transformed, a creative metamorphosis was simultaneously taking shape: the emergence of Miami’s art scene. Robins’ passion for the arts transcends beyond his personal life and into his work. He even positioned Dacra to be a real estate development firm “that uses architecture, art, design and cultural programming to build creative international destinations.” He speaks of art not in the way of colors on a canvas or molded form; it comes from a much deeper place. “I am instinctive in choosing art, but my life is an interaction between intuitive impulses and a conscious mind, one checks the other. When I become interested in an artist, I tend to collect their work in depth. For more than a decade I have been working with Jack Tilton, who has been the single greatest influence on me as an art collector. Jack is one of the most insightful people working in the art world today, he gave me the confidence to work harder on building my collection”. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Robins is also the Principle of the leading international design show Design Miami and is also responsible for introducing Miami Art Basel to the city. Art Basel has now become one of the largest art fairs in the world; featuring more than 200 galleries and attracting thousands of visitors each year. Miami Art Basel takes place over one week in December. During this time, the amount of events being hosted around the city is almost maddening. Each year it gets even larger. The act of attending all of these events, also known as Art Baseling, is not for the weak of spirit. Robins’ take on it is pretty accurate: “Trying to get ready for Art Basel Miami Beach – it’s a kind of endurance event that you have to train for.” Though Miami Art Basel only comes once a year, Robins believes in creating events and programs that will keep the community more engaged in the arts year round. The MDD currently has a diverse arts and culture program that seeks to constantly engage the community across a variety of art platforms. Some of the initiatives include a lecture series, an art day for families, a six week live music series called District Sounds, and a Site-Specific Performance Series that takes the performance out of the traditional theater and into the neighborhood. “As our base of important cultural institutions grows here in the Miami Design District, so has our ability to connect the community with distinguished artists, curators, critics and cultural figures. The lecture series offered at the de la Cruz Collection, the ICA/Miami and Locust Projects (exhibition space) both engages and inspires conversations within the Miami arts community.” Each event is carefully curated to further an understanding of contemporary art and to allow the artist to engage with the audience in unexpected ways. By breaking from the traditional, the community has an opportunity to experience art in more unusual and interactive ways. The programs and events are designed to make art accessible to everyone. GlobeIn: Inspiration in a Box

November-December Issue 2015 By Gisel Habibnejad In recent years, subscription boxes have increased in popularity. The reason is most likely attributed to the element of surprise. Because of this, customers can receive a self-paid gift every month—not just on birthdays or holidays. Who can blame them for that? Gift yourself a handcrafted present while helping others through GlobeIn. Essentially, their mission is to grant artisans global reach. “GlobeIn empowers female artisans from around the globe to bring their handcrafted products to the international market, and provides them the opportunity for financial stability and growth,” says Sepideh Nasiri, Chief Business Officer of GlobeIn. They make a living by hand-making products, located in countries such as Mexico, Sri Lanka, South Sudan, and Ghana. Those who subscribe or purchase from GlobeIn also help bring monetary support for these groups, who mostly live in the economically underdeveloped area of their country. The company connects these talented artisan groups with the world in order to keep their culture alive. “Since inception, GlobeIn has helped thousands of consumers discover a robust collection of artisanal products while enabling people in over 40 countries to attain a higher quality of life,” shares Nasiri. Each box comes with a basket weaved in Oaxaca, Mexico. This city harbors a small group of artisan peoples made of 50% of Mexico’s indigenous speaking population. The Oaxacan weavers are made up of three groups, supporting 30+ cooperating artisans in total. “One of our co-founders was traveling in Mexico looking for artisans and discovered the artisan who was making the baskets in a market in Oaxaca, we grew this from one artisan to currently 30,” explains Nasiri. The first group is split into two under Marina López: Don Juan García López and Doña Selerina García Lucas. Don Juan and his entire family work together to make a living through agriculture and weaving. Doña Selerina and her group live in a very poor town located in Sierra Sur. Doña Martina leads the third group, and thanks to GlobeIn, she is able to work from home to spend more time with her family and take care of her children. While each basket weaver has a unique background, how the baskets are made tell a special story in itself. The artisans begin by collecting palm leaves from the hills then letting them dry in the sun for three days before scratching them with a knife to remove the cuticle. Next, the leaves are dyed; however, the white and yellow leaves are already in their natural colors. Lastly, each basket takes up to 2-3 hours to weave. The baskets can be used as décor, storage, or as potted plant holders. When you receive a basket, you will get to know the artisan makers responsible for your products while learning where they come from. Who says you have to travel to grow your cultural intelligence? There are 10 themes to choose from when purchasing a box/subscription. The Wander Box was made for those who love to travel the world. It contains a mosquito repellant, travel journal, drawstring backpack, moringa bar, and a palm leaf basket. For a wonderful excuse to enjoy a picnic, The Picnic Box holds a tri bento and napkin set, sunstick, dried mango, and a palm leaf basket. Lastly, The Wellness Box persuades you to relax and take care of your body, enclosing an eye pillow, blessing bag, baobab powder, gift card to watsi.org, and a palm leaf basket. These boxes are all made up of goods from India, Brazil, Peru, and Benin. You can also purchase individual products, like hand-painted mugs and candles, coasters, and framed art. Create your own box by purchasing three or more items to get a free basket. For more information, please visit www.globein.com Click here to view this post in the MSM November/December 2015 issue

O Cinema: A Theater of Dreams

By Michèle Bigler Photography Courtesy of O Cinema It has been said that cinema has evolved into the modern book. Most of the classic novels we’ve all heard of or even read have come to life behind the screen in movie theaters and eventually made their way into our living rooms. Many of us can recollect fond memories of our first trip to the theater and the impressions of the big screen usually accompanied by popcorn, slushies or nachos. Cinema, like any art, can be classified into many different fields, however the most relevant is Hollywood Blockbusters vs. independent film. Although we won’t argue the quality of said genres, the lacking of smaller budget films in large venues is lamentable. Fortunately for South Florida film junkies looking to catch first-run independent, foreign, art and family films, they can opt to visit O Cinema for their alternative film needs.    With three locations that sprouted in Wynwood, Miami Beach and Miami Shores you can head over to the more intimate venues that don’t only offer unique screenings, but also attempt to involve the community with local artists by showcasing some of South Florida’s talent at their venues. Currently on display at the Wynwood location is the project 9TOPICS by Amalia Caputo and Marina Font, which takes a deeper look at the contemporary world and the way that we define our existence. Given that modernity is largely defined by a saturation of images and selfies, this project attempts to delineate the self through pictures that steer away from the selfie. 9TOPICS is a promising expo  encompassing 3000+ portrayals of public submissions that present a myriad of interpretations of the self to be exhibited until November 22, 2015. Evidently, O Cinema Miami is the perfect place for a date night or just an evening outside the box that is sure to culturally enrich any spectator and set a spellbinding train of thoughts into motion. For those interested, the following movies will be presented in November: Steve Jobs– yet another perspective into the life of one of the creators of our technologically engrossed modernity. Bridge of Spies– a film that zooms into the cold war through the candid eye of a scrupulous insurance lawyer sent on a mission to negotiate the exchange of three prisoners of war. The Prime Ministers: Soldiers and Peacemakers– an examination of Israeli and Egyptian relations as well as the events that surround the rescue of hostages in Entever in 1976. This documentary looks at the evolution of the tense political relations between Israel and its neighbors. Sufragette– a chronicle about the journey that a trio of women endured in order to advocate woman’s suffrage. La Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro)- a showing of Britain’s Royal Opera House featuring a story of love, betrayal and forgiveness. Room– A riveting gaze into a mother’s relationship with her son. What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy– a series of conversations that done a frank insight into the lives of the sons of nazis. Grovetoberfest: An Homage to Tradition and Craft Beer

By Michèle Bigler Didn’t have enough money saved up to fly across the ocean to Munich for the traditional Octoberfest? Not to worry Grovetoberfest is coming up this Saturday and you can enjoy a mini, South Florida version of the 2-century-old event. In case you didn’t know Bavarians have been uniting since 1810 at the end of September for 17 days in their famous Theresienwise gardens to honor a tradition that began with the union between King Ludwig I and Princess Therese. The festivities began with horse races, beer and wine and quickly developed into a yearly event that transformed itself through the years and is now mostly likely one of the more famous traditions around the world. Today, the horse races have been abolished and replaced with amusement facilities and people flock to Munich every year to dress in costume, gulp millions of liters of beer and get a taste of the Bavarian tradition.  Likewise, copycat festivals have sprouted around the globe and in our very own back yard, Peacock Park in Coconut Grove to be precise. This Saturday will be the 5th edition of South Florida’s take on the German tradition featuring its protagonist: beer, but not just any beer, craft beer. Grovetoberfest has quickly become the largest and most respected craft beer festival in Florida. With independent breweries popping up and making a name for themselves everywhere this is the place to learn about new beers, savor classics and catch up on brew happenings.  Not only will you be able to savor carefully crafted recipes, it will all be accompanied by live music provided by The Bougainvillea’s Live Music Stage and food vendors that will surely include the tangy liquid as a secret ingredient, just in case you ever wondered what beer cupcakes taste like. Well behaved dogs are welcome, children not so much (21+ crowd), so call the babysitter, get your leashes and head over to the grove for our own tradition the Miami way with beers, music, food, sun and laughs on Saturday October 17th 3-7p.m. Get your tickets here. http://www.grovetoberfest.com
