Vanessa Ferlito: Taking Graceland by Storm

By Gisel Habibnejad What started off as an acting gig on The Sopranos quickly snowballed into a successful career branching out into other TV shows and movies. Vanessa Ferlito has had the pleasure and privilege of working with talented directors, such as Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Oliver Stone, Lee Daniels, and Sam Raimi. At the moment, she graces the small screen on Graceland, in which she portrays the character of Charlie. Graceland follows the lives of several undercover agents living under one roof, known as “Graceland.” Leading up to the third season (which premiered on June 25th), Charlie has a lot going on for her right now. Between her fallen relationship with her love interest, Paul Briggs (played by Daniel Sunjata) whose child she is pregnant with, and facing the traumatic repercussions from her kidnapping – we can’t wait to see what season 3 has in store for us! We caught up with Vanessa on the new season of Graceland, what it was like working with John Leguizamo and Meryl Streep, and how it all started. MSM: How did you break into the acting world? VF: My first job was on The Sopranos then, two weeks later, I booked the lead of this independent movie called Online. Thankfully, after that I was working nonstop. I have gotten the great opportunity to work with Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Oliver Stone, Lee Daniels, Sam Raimi and have also worked opposite of John Leguizamo. It all happened really fast. MSM: What is the most challenging role you’ve played to date? VF: Probably Charlie – although, I want to say every role comes to mind. Death Proof and Shadowboxer, opposite Helen Mirren, were challenging. Maybe it’s because we’re three seasons in, but Charlie is such a complex character. Playing her and then playing her, undercover, which is playing a different character inside of the character, and also having a relationship in the house. It makes every year more challenging, and I am so thankful for that. When you’re on a TV show, for multiple seasons, you kind of become the person and take her home with you. It’s a long stretch, months at a time, you relocate and your emotions are all over the place. So, maybe because I’m in it right now, I want to say Charlie. MSM: What was it like working with John Leguizamo in Undefeated? VF: Working with John was wonderful. He is a fantastic guy and he’s an actor’s director. He basically let me do whatever I wanted to do. He trusted me 100%. I filmed two movies with him, in Undefeated I played his girlfriend, and in Nothing But the Holidays I played his sister. I’d work with him again in a heartbeat. MSM: How was it working with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams in Julie & Julia? VF: They are both extremely focused women. It was fantastic working with them, they are both lovely. MSM: What can we expect from the third season of Graceland? VF: A lot is revealed. There’s a lot of drama and it’s heartbreaking. You can expect a lot of truth to come out. MSM: How is season 3 different from the previous seasons? VF: It’s different in the sense that it gets a little more personal with the characters when Charlie is pregnant. Whereas, before, there was some personal stuff but this is crazy personal. The house is brought back together. MSM: What does the new season hold for Charlie and Briggs’ relationship? VF: Well, in season 3 we are not together. I can’t say what happens but Charlie is still pregnant. She is still dealing with that and just focusing on her baby and her health and finding (Jermaine) the man who beat her up in the second season. So as far as Briggs goes, it’s on ice for the moment. Ultimately she’s not even sure if she knows who he really is. MSM: How do you prepare for the intense scenes on the show? VF: I kind of just stay to myself, I listen to music, and I try not to goof off too much because that’s what I love to do. I try to think of what makes me sad, but I try not to go too deep into it because I’m scared of some of the thoughts that come up in my head when I have to go to a really dark place. MSM: Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about you? VF: I’m a homebody and I love to couch surf. I love staying home and watching Game of Thrones, that’s what I do. And spend time with my baby. JOANNA KRUPA

SUPERMODEL JOANNA KRUPA PROVES BEAUTY IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP Interviewed By Katie Jackson Photographed by Alessandra Fiorini Hair & Makeup by Tony Yates Styled by Katie Jackson Set Assistant: Nycole Sariol Location: 1100 Millecento Brickell Most know Joanna Krupa as the mega successful supermodel who has graced the covers of major publications including Maxim, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour, or as the star of the hit reality television shows Dancing with the Stars and The Real Housewives of Miami. But the Polish-American beauty’s success goes far beyond her glamorous glossy magazine covers and stints on TV. Krupa is leading a powerful movement against animal cruelty, actively protesting the injustice that happens to innocent animals every day. In providing care for abandoned animals through her organization Angels for Animal Rescue, participating in campaigns for PETA, and blasting animal cruelty on her social media accounts, Krupa has helped save thousands of animals’ lives. To this day, Krupa lives and breathes her beliefs, making her not only an icon in the fashion industry, but also an example of how to relentlessly stand up for a cause in which you truly believe. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Krupa moved to the United States at a young age and worked her way up to becoming one of the most successful supermodels. After landing high-profi le spreads in magazines and roles in multiple movies and television shows, Krupa was approached to become a part of the cast of The Real Housewives of Miami, a reality television show surrounding the lives of several glamorous women living in the Magic City. The show highlighted Krupa’s relationship with now husband and Mynt Lounge owner Romain Zago, airing their nuptials on the Season 3 finale. Through the series, Krupa has remained friends with a few of the RHOM cast members, including Miami’s go-to celebrity dentist Karent Sierra. “One of the best things that came out of the show was my friendship with Karent,” said Krupa. “She is one of my closest friends.” Since the show’s last season, Krupa has been enjoying being a newlywed while also maintaining a busy career schedule and traveling back and forth between her homes in Miami and Los Angeles. Most of Krupa’s projects are based in L.A., while Zago’s are in Miami. Though she admits that living a bi-coastal lifestyle provides its diffi culties, Krupa says it is crucial to maintaining both her career and a healthy marriage with Zago. “We make it work because we have no other choice,” said Krupa. “Neither one of us want to give up our careers. But when we are ready to start a family we will have to be based in one city when our kids start school.” In addition to her marriage and career, Krupa has made animal activism an immensely important priority in her life. Always an animal lover, Krupa realized the horrific cruelty millions of animals experience after watching a PETA—People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals—video. “I saw the way animals are skinned alive for their fur, and I had to do something,” said Krupa. “I had to help spread awareness and be a voice for the voiceless and defenseless. I decided to dedicate my life to do whatever I possibly could to spread the message on all types of animal cruelty until the day that I die.” Krupa began participating in PETA campaigns, bringing worldwide attention to animal cruelty and the anti-fur movement. After becoming one of PETA’s most successful models, Krupa led animal cruelty protests before deciding to create her own non-profit organization Angels for Animal Rescue. “There are so many big organizations out there where you don’t know exactly where the money is going,” said Krupa. “So I wanted to open my own organization where I know that one hundred percent of the money is going to the animals.” While Krupa’s organization is small—it is run solely by Krupa, her rescue partner Gabi Gutierrez, and sister Marta—Angels for Animal Rescue has been responsible for saving thousands of animals’ lives. “We rescue all kinds of animals including cats, dogs, rabbits, pigs, chickens, etc.,” said Krupa. “But since we don’t have our own facility we rely on donations and fosters to grow our rescue efforts so we can keep saving lives.” But Krupa’s animal activism does not end there. Krupa has also spoken out against animal testing, and even decided to create her own cruelty-free skincare line, Cellogica. “I wanted products that really work and that aren’t tested on animals,” said Krupa. “There is no reason at all to test on poor, innocent animals for products.” Cellogica uses natural ingredients to reverse the signs of ageing at the cellular level. “There is a day cream and a night cream, and they both do their individual magic which makes them a great team.” As far as her successful modeling and TV career, Krupa will soon be jetting off to her homeland for Season 5 of Poland’s Next Top Model, and then head back to L.A. to shoot a movie where she—very fittingly—will play an animal activist. But no matter what prominent project Krupa takes on, it is evident that she models so much more than the latest chic fashions and sultry swimwear. Miami Beach Celebrates 100th Birthday

By Angela Betancourt Photography by Mitchell Zachs On March 26th, thousands of people gathered on the sands of South Beach to celebrate Miami Beach’s 100th birthday. The city, in partnership with the Hard Rock, joined forces to host the Hard Rock Rising – Miami Beach 2015 Global Music Festival. The star studded concert featured Andrea Bocelli, Gloria Estefan, Wyclef Jean, Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, Flo Rida, and more. Though it was unusual to see such an unlikely collection of artists, the music line-up perfectly represented the melting pot that is Miami Beach. There was no denying it was a concert for the ages and a fantastic conclusion to several weeks of nonstop celebrations across the city. However, this anniversary was about more than just nonstop partying. The city, in partnership with local businesses and organizations, came together to celebrate the occasion in a variety of unique ways that reflects Miami Beach’s diverse cultural community. Several days leading up to the finale concert, Miami Beach Mayor Phillip Levine presided over a mass wedding of 100 people (50 couples) as a part of the 100 years celebration. Among the happily wed were same-sex couples who were finally able to get married legally in the state of Florida. Same-sex marriage became legal in the state at the start of the year, and this marked a historic milestone for Miami Beach’s LGBT community. The Art Deco Museum, founded by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) in Miami Beach, opened its doors to host the Miami Centennial Photograph Exhibition. Renowned professional photographer Johnny Arraiz, whose been recognized by the Congress of the United States of America for giving his invaluable service to the community, showcased his latest exhibition “Miami Beach, 100 Years, 100 Photos,” which immortalized special moments in the city’s history. This exhibit was one of many hosted by the museum to educate and engage locals and tourists alike on Miami Beach’s rich history. The Miami Beach Centennial celebrations became an extra special event for 100 men and women who passed their citizenship requirements and officially became citizens of the United States. Leon Rodriguez, Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officially welcomed these 100 new citizens after they swore allegiance to America. Representing more than 25 different countries, it was fitting to have this ceremony in a city that was built by immigrants from all over the world. Orchestra Miami and The Leroy Schecter Foundation celebrated the centennial with a free picnic concert that took attendees on a musical tour through the highlights of Miami Beach’s history. Orchestra Miami believes in the power of music to strengthen a community. Now in its 8th season, they provide high-quality classical symphonic music and programming that celebrates Miami’s diverse cultural heritage. In order to reach as many people as possible, Orchestra Miami events are almost always free. The Miami Beach Centennial was as much about celebrating its past and present, as it was about looking towards the future. As Miami continues to evolve as a global city and as its population continues to grow denser, its future becomes even more important. In a show of its dedication to protecting Miami Beach from the effects of climate change, the city announced during the celebrations, that it has begun developing a variety of initiatives to generate more awareness about global climate change. The city is also planning on creating an environmental summit hosted by the Mayor that will feature scientists, educators, and other influential leaders from different disciplines, coming together to discuss environmental advocacy. Miami Beach’s history helped define its foundation, but its present and all of the people, organizations, and businesses, who love the city today, will drive Miami Beach into the future and forward for another 100 years. Happy Birthday, Miami Beach.

Power Up with J.R. Ramirez

By Gisel Habibnejad From playing a superhero in Arrow to starring as a key person involved in a drug dealing organization in Power, J.R. Ramirez has quite an acting career under his belt. And, it’s only the beginning. The versatile actor, born in Matanzas, Cuba, found his calling in his early twenties after filming several commercials in Tampa, Florida. He then became eager to study theatre, where his passion for acting grew more and more over the years. For the past year, J.R. has been juggling his roles in Arrow and Power. It was inevitable he would discover a resemblance between the two. “Both characters are similar in that they are very smart and have had an extremely hard upbringing.” The superhero series, Arrow, follows several DC Comics heroes and villains, with its protagonist being Green Arrow. J.R. was cast as Ted Grant/Wildcat in the TV show last year, making his debut in the third season. Ted Grant entered the series as a former boxer and current gym owner for underprivileged children. As the show progresses, fans have been excited to see hints that lead up to his big reveal as Wildcat, his vigilante persona. Preparing for this role has helped him gain a deeper appreciation for boxing. The second season of the STARZ series, Power, will include a lot more of J.R.’s mysterious character, Julio. The show follows a high profile nightclub owner, Ghost, who also runs an exclusive drug dealing organization on the side. That’s when Julio steps in. Julio becomes Ghost’s right-hand man and second in command. Premiering June 6th, viewers will finally get an in-depth look into his story and find out why he’s one of Ghost’s most trusted confidants. “This year, things really seem to spiral out of control. The stakes are ridiculously high and Julio plays an intricate part in making sure things stay as tight as possible. He also shared his excitement for fans to see how his character manages to twist the plot this season. J.R. has also enjoyed working with the cast, such as Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who plays Ghost’s mentor and is also the show’s executive producer. “50 is a trip!” says the humble actor. “We crack jokes all day. I love how dedicated he is to the growth of his character. I think people are going to be very surprised.” When J.R. was just a child, he and his family made the big move from Cuba to South Florida. His favorite family traditions include Christmastime back home with his family. “Lots of good Cuban food and salsa dancing – can’t beat that!” Today, he resides in Los Angeles and newly enjoys playing golf. “Now, I just have to stop hitting trees, water, and people and it’ll be perfect!” he playfully remarks. Aside from boxing to prepare for his role, his workout routine consists of tennis, hiking, and some yoga classes. With his career on the rise, there’s no telling what heights J.R. will reach. He gushed over his fondness for film and how he would enjoy to be involved in other facets of the industry, stating he will definitely love to direct in the future. He also dishes on some of the many actors he would love to work with. “There are so many great actors out there, but I love the work Mark Ruffalo is doing.” Presently, J.R. loves all the projects he’s involved in, “I feel like we really stepped up our game for Power’s Season 2, and I’m sure I can speak for all of us when I say…I can’t wait for June 6th!” Power premieres June 6th at 9pm on STARZ For more information about Power, please visit starz.com/originals/power For more information about Arrow, please visit cwtv.com/shows/arrow Follow J.R. One on One with Ayah Marar

By Gisel Habibnejad International music artist, Ayah Marar, leaves a unique trace of talent on everything she touches. Her talent can be found in all aspects of the industry, from songwriting to collaborations with Calvin Harris. Although she was born in Jordan, her musical abilities grew when she moved to the UK – at the tender age of seventeen. Everything she has to thank for her success throughout her musical journey can be heard within each of her songs. MSM sits down with Ayah to discuss her journey: MSM: When did you realize you wanted to pursue music professionally? AM: I have always been involved in music, I got my Grade 8 classical piano at 16 and was a ballet dancer for 10 years. When I moved to the UK I got involved in running a DnB [drum and bass] night and a label, it was a natural progression! MSM: What was it like moving to the UK from Jordan and living with a newfound independence at the age of 17? AM: I loved it. It allowed me to explore music and friendships in a way I had never before. I loved growing up in the Middle East but London is definitely home now. MSM: Who are your biggest musical influences? AM: I adore music and am inspired by it however it comes. If something is done with love, you can feel it regardless of technical execution. I adore Badu, Robyn, Michael, Stevie, Hathaway, Ella, so much inspiration in music it’s hard to pinpoint! MSM: How have your Jordanian roots and UK living experiences influenced your music and lyrical writing style? AM: I’m not sure that they have really, my experiences are personal, they wouldn’t be affected by where I am, more what I’m feeling and who I’m around. MSM: How have you managed to balance and co-exist in the underground and mainstream musical worlds? AM: Well, it’s a daily grind and I’m always trying to find ways to keep it balanced. I’ve been lucky in my collaborations and the people I have worked with, my team and I liaise daily about how we keep things relevant and progressive, and most importantly, entertaining. MSM: Tell us about the first time you met Calvin Harris. What is it like working with him? AM: Calvin and I met at a record shop I worked at in the early 2000s. He needed a place to live and I had a spare room, we lived and worked together and have been buddies ever since. I feature on his last two albums. I’m so proud of him. MSM: What was the inspiration behind your latest song, “Bass Soldier?” AM: “Bass Soldiers” is a nod to all the people who have kept DnB [drum and bass] alive and who continue to love their work and their scene. We are in this together, man. MSM: What is in store for your fans in 2015? AM: Lots of music, shows, and possibly a second album! Watch this space! MSM: Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about you? AM: Keep supporting independent music and feel free to say ‘hello’ on my socials! On the Record with DJ Irie

By Craig Skilling It is no secret DJ Irie has conquered the world of music, but he has also proved to be well-rounded in other aspects of his life. One of his biggest accomplishments includes his Irie Foundation, through which he has successfully helped steer at-risk children in South Florida towards the right direction for a promising future. Becoming the NBA’s first in-house DJ, he has paved the way for countless NBA musical entertainers. With Irie Weekend having celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, there is no telling what the Miami Heat DJ cannot do. His highly driven sense of ambition and wholesome personality are just a couple of reasons why Miami has come to admire and respect the talented DJ. MSM sits down with DJ Irie to catch up: MSM: How did you come up with the name DJ Irie? DI: Right before I was introduced on stage at my first gig ever, the head DJ asked for my name. When I told him “DJ Ian,” he laughed and said I need to come up with a better one. Based on my Jamaican background and the meaning of the word, he named me with “DJ Irie” which means “peace and positivity.” MSM: Talk to us about your success to date and milestones you are proud of. DI: I’m blessed. One of the most prolific things for me would be the launch of my Irie Foundation, through which I’ve been able to meet so many amazing people, and have been able to give back. We’ve awarded scholarships and raised thousands of dollars for so many organizations and causes. Another milestone for me has been performing at the Fifa World Cup Final in Rio. That is something I couldn’t have possibly even dreamed of taking part in. MSM: You recently hosted your 10th Annual Irie Weekend. Can you share with our readers the motivation for starting Irie Weekend and how you have been able to sustain the model for continued success and growth with this being your 10th annual event? Who does Irie Weekend benefit and why? DI: Having previously worked with Alonzo Mourning and Zo’s Summer Groove to raise money for local charities, I had experience in participating in causes. I needed a main driver of raising funds for awareness and came up with Irie Weekend. I knew setting up a golf tournament would attract enough attention to get people involved. And, it was, by far, the best choice because we have been able to forge so many relationships through it. The biggest takeaway from having the 10th anniversary was how taken back I was from the scale of the event. With the Irie Foundation, we’re involved in all areas of at-risk youth to fill the voids. We created After School All-Stars, partnered with Jason Taylor as a reading program, and also the Cultural Passport Programs to offer a constructive program where students could continue to learn and become well-rounded. MSM: At the event, you announced that your parents, who reside in Jamaica, were experiencing Irie Weekend for the first time. How did it feel to be able to share this milestone event with your parents? DI: It was beyond special and meaningful. My parents have been the pillar of our family. Their guidance and life lessons have made me the person I am today. Immediately after the event, they called me to say they were pleasantly surprised and didn’t realize how huge it was before. That made the 10th anniversary milestone extra special. MSM: What drives you to wake-up and keep going on this fast-paced schedule? DI: I’m a morning person, first off, but I know the work is never done – I’m driven by the sense of urgency of what is on the horizon. MSM: You conquer everything you put your hands on. Is it safe to say that DJ Irie is not just a businessman but a brand? Why or why not? DI: The best part about it is that we’ve combined this passion of music with the art form of deejaying to create something even more significant. To be able to have a business today that thrives from being innovative and making its own initiatives – whether I’m spinning a record or not – is a true testament to being a brand and a business on its own. MSM: Tell MSM’s readers something interesting about yourself that only a few people know. DI: I’m a history buff – World War I, II, and history in general. MSM: You have worked for and with several celebrities and individuals of prominence and influence. Can you share your most memorable celebrity interaction to date and what made it most memorable? DI: A couple of years ago my buddy, Jamie Foxx, invited me to DJ at a birthday party for Robert Downey Jr. It was an amazing night – anywhere you turned, you’d see a big-time celebrity. But the most memorable part of the night was when the party was at its peak and I look up to see Sting walking up to the dance floor with his partner. The funny thing is I was two records away from playing a remix of “Roxanne”, so I decided to play it at that moment. I’m looking over at Sting and he looks over at me so I give him that nod like “we have to do this for Rob” and he nodded back. Then, I threw him the microphone in the middle of the dance floor. He then begins to sing “Roxanne” and the whole place erupted! This felt literally right out of the movies. It was an insane and memorable moment. MSM: Fast forward 10 years down the road. Where do you see yourself personally and professionally? DI: I would like to step back from the rigorous travel and tour schedule – not to say I would completely disappear. I would like to focus on all the relationships I’ve forged throughout the years by connecting and engaging in a higher level with

Phil & Orianne Collins Cover Shoot & Interview

LITTLE DREAMS, BIG CONCERT By Katie Jackson  In February of 2000, a foundation brimming with a passion to provide a unique form of philanthropy and compassionate support was born. The Little Dreams Foundation, created by music legend Phil Collins and former wife and jewelry designer Orianne Collins-Mejjati, fulfills the dreams of children who do not have the means to achieve their desired goals in music, art, and sports. To say the foundation has been successful would be an understatement, as it has positively impacted over 300 lives, with participants going on to be famous guitarists, karate champions, Olympic athletes, singers, and more. Originating in Switzerland, Phil and Orianne have made it their mission to spread their foundation across the globe. After expanding to countries like Belgium and Morocco, the Little Dreams Foundation finally reached the United States this past year—with the first stop none other than the Magic City. After receiving numerous letters from children asking for help to fulfill their passions, Phil and Orianne decided that it was time to create an organization that not only provided monetary support, but also provided guidance and special individualized attention. “We thought instead of just sending checks, we should do better,” says Orianne. The program is aimed at young children between the ages of four and sixteen. An application must be completed on the Little Dreams Foundation’s website, and if selected, children are invited to audition. Once the children are chosen to be a part of the foundation, they receive a personalized program that specifically caters to their area of interest within the three categories of music, art, or sports. Participants can receive training courses, equipment, summer camps, complete coverage of hotel and traveling expenses, personal trainers or instructors, and so much more. “It’s full support,” says Orianne. Though the children are young when they join the foundation, they often stay with the program until they are well within their twenties. The foundation has been so successful that Phil and Orianne decided to create the LDF No Difference Program in 2003. The new program provides the same monetary support and guidance, but for children who are handicapped. “With the help of the foundation, we see that the kids are feeling so much better. It’s been a great success,” says Orianne. After announcing that the Little Dreams Foundation will be coming to Miami in a press conference at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel last November, and holding the first Miami auditions in March, both Phil and Orianne are excited to further the expansion. “The objective today is to be known in Florida, then state by state, and finally to be known across the U.S,” says Orianne. Until then, the foundation’s annual gala will be held at the Fillmore Miami Beach this December during Art Basel. Phil will lend his voice to the “Dreaming on the Beach Concert,” along with Latin superstars Laura Pausini and Alejandra Guzman, children from the foundation in The Little Dreamers band, and “lots of different surprises,” promises Orianne. “We love surprises!” Click here to view post on the November/December 2014 issue. One on One with Up and Coming Music Artist Veronica Vega

MSM: At what age did you start singing? I’ve been singing since I was about 3-4 years old but I started professionally doing it at the age of 13. MSM: What artists inspired you to start singing? I’m inspired by many artists not just one or two. Culture really intrigues me so any artist that offers talent and culture is inspiring. MSM: Pitbull is like family to you. How did you meet and what important role does he play presently in your life? I met Pitbull when I was 15 years old through doing music and recording in the studio. Pitbull and I have an awesome working relationship. He and I come from the same background as we are first generation Americans with Latin parents. He sees a lot of himself in me as I do in him. That makes our connection strong. MSM: Tell us what it was like to have Pitbull collaborate on your recent single “Wicked”? Collaborating with Pitbull on Wicked is of course nothing but an honor and a blessing. For me it was a great learning experience as well because I got to see the way he works as well as his attack on records and approach in business which is quite impressive. MSM: How would you describe your style of music? I would describe my style of music as a blend of cultures. Its a fusion of sounds and melodies found in different genres of music. I’ve mixed tropical music with hip-hop, dance, and reggae. It’s untapped so it’s refreshing. But a person who probably couldn’t describe it would say its pop music. MSM: What is your next single? Album? Is it in Spanish or English? When is it slated to be released? My next single will be announced very soon. Currently I’m recording a few more records for my album both in English and Spanish and collaborating with producers and artists from around the world. Greatness takes time! 😉 MSM: Legendary producer Polow Da Don who has worked with some of the big names in the music industry such as Usher, Chris Brown, Nelly, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, among many others, has been working with you… How did you both meet and how long have you been working with him? Working with Polow Da Don is a dream. Aside from being undeniably talented and recognized for his success in music, he’s been an incredible mentor for me. Working with him has motivated me and taught me hard work and dedication. He inspires me to be better everyday. He pushes me to the limit and his expectations for me keeps me on my toes. Musically, I can’t even explain how genius he is. What he’s done for me musically has no words. I can’t wait for the world to hear it. In short, working with Polow has been one of my greatest blessings. MSM: What is your sense of style and who are your favorite fashion designers? My sense of style ranges depending on my mood. For the most part, I like to be comfortable. I’m from Miami so anything that shows some skin is a winner to me! (laughs). I’m a girly girl but I do dabble in boy apparel as well. I like young, fresh, and colorful things. I have a bipolar style lol. MSM: What is in store for the future of Veronica Vega? New music and visuals for my fans. I pray to change peoples lives and inspire others like great artists have inspired me. Through music and culture I hope to represent a group of people like me (Young Latin Americans) and help create awareness about our culture throughout the world. One on One with Deco Drives Shireen Sandoval-Cover Shoot

By Angela Betancourt Keeping track of all the entertaining things happening in South Florida is not for the faint of heart. Between the pulsating nightlife, fashion shows, movie shoots, and all the celebrities gallivanting around town, Keeping up with the Kardianshians is a walk in the park. Yet one woman has proven that when it comes to reporting on all things entertainment, she stands in a class of her own. Shireen Sandoval is the current Entertainment/Features and Film Critic for Deco Drive on WSVN. Her job is to travel around the world interviewing some of the world’s biggest stars while keeping Miami informed of the latest celebrity and fashion happenings. If there is something going down, “Shireen is on the scene” to get the scoop day after day without skipping a beat. She has interviewed some of the most famous people on earth like Oprah and George Clooney and does it all with an impeccable sense of style. There is no doubt that Shireen is also one of Miami’s best dressed reporters and she proudly shares her love of all things fashion on her blog “Shireen’s Favorite Things”. However, before her favorite things became a blog; before she was jet setting around the world, and interviewing Oprah; Shireen was a woman with a big vision and a dream to create an amazing life. Shireen was born on August 15th in Albuquerque New Mexico. Growing up she spent a lot of time with her grandfather, the late Robert Wilkes, who worked in the entertainment industry and was the first to expose her to the world of TV and film. Mr. Wilkes was a sound engineer and jack of all trades. After years of working behind the scenes of major TV shows and motion pictures like the Exorcist, Mr. Wilkes retired into theatre and at one point worked at the famed Kennedy Theatre in Washington DC. “He was very interesting and very worldly,” said Shireen. She credits him for being a big influence in her career and setting her on a path into television. She enrolled at Eastern New Mexico University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in both Broadcast Journalism and Theatre Arts. After graduation she began her broadcasting career as a reporter/anchor at the ABC and NBC affiliates in Amarillo, Texas. Initially she wanted to report hard news. She envisioned herself as a war correspondent and telling stories that would change the world. Instead, she found herself reporting entertainment news. “At job auditions they always said I was an ok reporter but that my entertainment stuff was really good,” she explained. “But I fought it at first.” She admired women like Katie Couric and Barbara Walters that were out there reporting on the major issues. But it was the entertainment industry that became her true calling. She realized that it didn’t matter what kind of reporter she became as long as she could tell great stories and enjoy doing it. And just like that, “Shireen on the Scene” was born. Her exuberant personality, intelligence, and charm immediately began catapulting her career to new heights. Early on she got an opportunity to work at the FOX affiliate in Indianapolis, Indiana where she continued her “Shireen on the Scene” segments as the Features/Entertainment Reporter. A few years later, Shireen found herself in Miami and joined the FOX Affiliate WSVN where she became one of Miami’s most recognized TV personalities. It’s been a decade and Shireen is going stronger than ever. In 2006, she left for New York to follow her dream of being on a national show. She fearlessly took a bite out of the big apple and went to work for NBC and freelanced for ESPN. What she discovered during this time was a defining moment in her career.   “I wanted to work on a national show and then found that creativity is not as needed. You are a talent and you become a performer and deliver information. I lost the ability to be fully involved with a story. You go to an interview and they give you the questions you have to ask.” She shared admitting that she was uncomfortable asking questions that were often times irrelevant. “I got to do national TV and it was everything I thought it would be, but it turned out I wasn’t who I thought I was. I needed to be more involved in the creative process.” A year later, Shireen moved back to Miami and reclaimed her rightful spot “on the scene”. “New York is great but I love Miami. I don’t see myself leaving Florida. There is a great quality of life here and I love the people I work with. Deco Drive is a special show and WSVN is like a family. We love the talent and the producers we have. It’s a team. You don’t get that on a national level.,” said Shireen. Shireen’s life really is as shiny and as glamorous as it looks. Though she recognizes her many blessings, life doesn’t sparkle all the time. To her the downside of being an entertainment reporter, film critic, and active blogger, are the hours of relentless work that go into making things look seamless. In college no one ever told her that working in this industry meant working on holidays, working crazy hours, and not always being able to lead a normal routine like everyone else. “I wouldn’t change my past but I have made sacrifices to have my career. You have to be really committed to staying on the top. I’m not a mother and I’m single now even though I’ve been married before. I gave up some degree of working on my personal life. It just kind of happened by default not because I did it on purpose,” she said. “I haven’t found that perfect balance but I am working on it. I believe that a woman can have it all.” Staying on top of her game might not be easy, but Shireen makes it

One on One with Kevin Lyttle

By Craig K. Skilling “Turn me on” three simple yet provocative words and song lyrics that captured the heart of music lovers from across the globe ten years ago has hit the charts again! I had the pleasure of sitting down recently with the singer and song- writer of those lyrics along with his wife, the Barack and Michelle power couple of south Florida and the Caribbean, the engaging Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Lyttle. Kevin, born Lescott Kevin Lyttle Coombs from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is most known for his talented high pitch sound that universally blessed us in 2004 with that hit single “Turn me On” off of Atlantic Records. We met up for good food, drinks and conversation where everything was on the table including Kevin’s latest business ventures, philanthropic efforts, married/ family life, the early days of his music industry career and of course his new music! As Kevin and I began to catch up I was informed by Jackie that Kevin just returned from a long trip for a concert performance and philanthropic mission in the south pacific island of Papa New Guinea along with R&B singer, songwriter and actress Ms. Mya Harrison. The two plan to record a song together once their schedule permits in 2014. The reminder allowed for Kevin to open up on some of the amazing things that are currently happening in his life. “Man, it’s crazy “Turn me on” is back on the charts and is currently #7 on the local charts and #28 on the Amazon’s best-selling digital songs list,” says Kevin emphatically. As I looked across the table I noticed a few of Kevin’s gadgets including two cell phones and a dual phone/wristwatch device. Kevin recently struck a deal with Samsung to be an official brand ambassador and as part of the deal receives the latest in their mobile technology. Speaking of mobile technology Kevin has just inked a deal with a company called ‘Pack’ to build his personalized and branded “Fan Experience” celebrity app available in the iTunes, Amazon and Google app store. Kevin is a brand and what I found out is that the lovely lady sitting next to him, his wife and business manager has been extremely instrumental in helping to build that brand. “We actually met when we were both thirteen in third form” (the US equivalent of high school) says Dr. Jacqueline James-Lyttle who received her PhD in Engineering from the University of Miami. While both were thirteen Kevin said he was going to marry the Vincentian when he turned sixteen. It would take several years for their stars to align and for marriage to become a reality but Jackie mentions with a gleam and glow that Kevin would always inquire to see how she was doing and remained confident that he would marry his island beauty one day. Their bond seems to be unbreakable however Kevin would admit that that being an international touring artist and balancing being a husband and father would not be possible without the support of his multitalented wife and business manager. Although Kevin is not a casual consumer of alcohol he did mention that when he occasionally has a drink you better believe it will be Monte Carlo Vodka in his cup. Kevin signed a deal with Monte Carlo Vodka to represent their brand throughout the world. If that were not enough he and his wife Jackie are partners in a phenomenal startup company called Kidsville, currently located in Southland Mall with new Florida locations being confirmed. Kidsville is the ultimate experience for kids and a place where parents can safely consider dropping their children off while working or shopping at the mall. Just when I thought we were going to catch up on his music the entertainment mogul mentions another partnership with a company called Chill Shot. Chill Shot is the natural liquid version of what someone like Bob Marley would have truly appreci- ated. No it’s not a liquid version of marijuana but it is a legal FDA approved version and stimulating experience that will basically make an individual feel “chill” after taking the shot. We shifted our conversation to Kevin’s independent label Tarakon Records, co-founded by his wife Jackie. Tarakon has been instrumental in discovering and signing new talent as well as releasing Kevin’s latest music including a song titled “Anywhere” featuring south Florida homegrown, worldwide, music heavy- weight FloRida. “Anywhere” is one of Kevin’s most recent singles and has been licensed by Hollywood for a film titled “What about Love’ featuring Sharon Stone and Andy Garcia. The film will be released on February 15th, 2015 and will incorporate scenes from the film in an official Kevin Lyttle music video. Tarakon is a rising star in the independent music label space and has been able to secure several major deals for Kevin and their artists including a quickly approaching print, radio and television talk show campaign. As for new music I am told Kevin’s new LP will be titled the “Diplomat” partly titled after his world travels and his official appointment as ambassador of St. Vincent & The Grenadines. Kevin still tours throughout the world touching almost every continent. His upcoming single features another Caribbean star “Mr. Boombastic,” international recording artist Shaggy. Additional artists to be featured on the new LP include Yagay Mackie, King James out of Ruwanda, Medina in Sweden and many more to make up the international and diverse sound. I had the pleasure of listening to the various songs on his Samsung device and must say the diverse blend and world sound of dance, reggae, soca, pop and r & b is going to make the Diplomat a must get for sure! When asked what drives him to continue the hectic daily grind, Kevin mentions his family including his talented little man KJ, his wife and the Janice Lyttle Foundation named after his mom who passed away a few years ago. The foundation is really
