Julio Iglesias, Jr.: World Tour with His Father, Family Life, & What’s Next

September-October Issue 2015 MIAMI NATIVE & SPANISH SINGER REVEALS WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING ON TOUR WITH HIS FATHER, GROWING UP AS AN ‘IGLESIAS,’ & WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR HIM By Gisel Habibnejad Photographed by Ernesto Poblacion With musical talent running through his veins, it’s safe to say Julio Iglesias, Jr. was born to grace the world with his gift. Throughout his lifetime and various works, music has always remained a constant. There’s no denying the greatness that awaits Julio in the near future with a new album in the works and joining his father on his world tour, among the many. Julio was born to Spanish music icon Julio Iglesias, and Filipina socialite and journalist Isabel Preysler. Growing up, his parents instilled morals and values that molded him into the person he is today. “My dad taught me the importance of working hard in anything you do in life and to always surround yourself with great people.” Having a popular singer as a father also had its perks. “When I was younger, I saw my father like any young boy sees his father. As I got older, I began to realize that my father was famous. It was always nice to hear my friends and their parents express how they love my father’s music,” says the singer. “It’s a great feeling when people appreciate what your parents do.” Although he doesn’t plan on having children in the near future, he can’t wait to instill his family values into his future offspring. “I value good people with big hearts, family, friends, and music.” As Julio grew older, his passion for music blossomed and he soon realized his purpose in life. “Growing up in a musically-inclined family, you learn to really appreciate it.” While it would be easy to assume Julio broke into show business through music, it was actually through his modeling career. With several campaigns under his belt, his most notable include: Versace and Gap. Soon after, he ventured off into other aspects of the industry. He displayed his dance moves on the Spanish version of Dancing with the Stars known as ¡Mira Quien Baila! He then went on to win the first season of Gone Country, featuring various celebrities from different genre backgrounds competing to become a country singer. However, the most memorable of his TV stints has to be his frequent appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. Somewhere between his modeling career and television shows, Julio toured and became the opening act of Cher’s Do You Believe? 1999 North American tour. Most recently, Julio recorded the album Latin Lovers, featuring various artists coming together to create a compilation covering popular Spanish music hits. Along with Nuno Resende and Damien Sargue, Julio performed several of these covers at numerous concerts throughout Europe. Among the popular singles are “Vous Les Femmes,” an original by his father, “La Camisa Negra,” and “Livin’ La Vida Loca.” When he’s not touring or traveling all over the world, he’s in Miami–the place he has called home for most of his life. Julio was born in Spain, but moved to our beloved city when he was a child. Ever since, it has held a special place in his heart. “My family and friends live here. There’s nothing better than that.” An ideal day for Julio is relaxing by the beach and playing tennis. “The great thing about Miami is that you never get bored here; the city is always expanding. There’s always something to do.” However, ‘home is where the heart is’ and his heart belongs to his beautiful wife, Charisse Verhaert. Charisse and Julio began dating 12 years ago and finally tied the knot in 2011. “I love my wife, she’s an amazing woman. I’m very blessed to have her by my side,” says Julio about the Belgian model. While he’s usually touring overseas, some of his favorite destinations are within our very boarders. He takes delight in making occasional trips to the Florida Keys and spending time in his vacation home. Besides boating and kite boarding, the drive itself brings him bliss. “The spectacular view of the ocean on both sides when crossing the Seven Mile Bridge really makes the long drive worth it.” Having attended Menlo College near San Francisco, Julio grew affection towards Northern California, which he visits at least four times a year. One of his favorite places on the west coast is Lake Tahoe. During the winter, he can’t get enough of snowboarding; while in the summer, he enjoys the quiet beaches. Earlier this year, it was announced Julio would be joining his father on his world tour. Their first official performance together took place on May 22nd in Romania. Bulgaria, Spain, and Portugal were among the other countries that followed. In September, he will perform alongside his father in Guadalajara, Santiago de Querétaro, Mérida, Yucatán, Hermosillo, Puebla, and Monterrey in Mexico. In November and December, he looks forward to touring in Asia. “It’s a great experience because I get to spend a lot of quality time with my father. To share a stage with him in front of 20,000 people has been a dream come true.” As for a concert in Miami, locals should be on the look out for an upcoming performance down the road. With this in mind, we had to ask: are there any future plans for a performance with Julio, his father, and Enrique? We were pleasantly surprised to find the answer to be yes. Whenever this occurs, it is sure to make history! We were especially excited to learn that Julio has begun writing and recording songs for his next Spanish solo album, which will be released next spring. Everyone will be able to get to know Julio on a personal level like never before, and he can’t wait to share it with the world. Creating the Stepping Stones for At-Risk Youth

By Alyse Mier Photography by World Red Eye July 9th marked a day of pure joy for the staff and students at the Irie Foundation Allapattah Music and Literacy Center (IFAMLC). Media, volunteers, staff, Jeff Ransdell from Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and Miami’s very own DJ Irie were in attendance to celebrate the van that had been gifted to the center by Merrill Lynch. The students of the center had been working tirelessly for days to put together a performance that would impress the crowd. The performances consisted of exceptionally talented rappers, dancers, solo singers and spoken word poets who made the crowd’s jaws drop. The performers exhibited qualities of artistic professionals and were true examples of the center’s incredible success. Using the arts as a motivational and learning platform, the Irie Foundation has provided kids with a creative outlet for self-expression through its art programs. The students are encouraged to use their talents to increase self-confidence and build essential life skills. At the center, the children are taught how to write songs, produce music videos, edit music videos and, thanks to Irie’s efforts, may soon be able to listen to their very own music on the radio. Most importantly, the center works with each student to ensure that they turn their love for music and arts into a passion for academic success. Free tutoring lessons are offered to every single student and made mandatory for those students that want to participate in music and art classes but are receiving a “C” or below in one or more subjects in school. “Irie and his team are creating opportunities for these young kids to learn and to express themselves, and quite honestly I’m just proud to be a part of it,” said Ransdell who is the Managing Director and Market Executive for Merrill Lynch in the Southeast, Latin America & Caribbean. At the heart of the center is DJ Irie, whose goal is to provide at-risk youth with opportunities to express themselves through a creative outlet and in ways that would otherwise not be provided to them. He wants to be able to award the kids with the same opportunities and experiences that he was able to take advantage of when he was younger. “If I wasn’t able to experience and enjoy music and art at an early age, I don’t think I would be the person that I am today. Some of the kids in there know how to shoot, produce and edit music videos. When you have that knowledge you can take that and pursue it as a career. They don’t have to depend on anybody else, so the fact that all those things are available for them now really enables them to make that decision,” said Irie. The youth currently served by the center are walking testaments that the arts are an extremely powerful learning tool and exemplify just how critical a solid academic foundation is. Hop on the Acoustic Carpet

By Michèle Bigler The Arts & Entertainment district has been coming on strong with complimentary cultural gatherings that are buzzing all over town. Most recently, MSM attended “The Acoustic Carpet” a concert that was held in Canvas’ cozy backyard. The stage strategically sported an Egyptian-like carpet that assisted in escorting attendees on a musical journey guided by artists Keith Johns, Noah Nite and the local starlet Rafa Jo Harris. The night kicked off with Michael Scott from Miami’s WLRN reciting a kind introduction to newcomer and former scientist Keith Johns whose set featured melodic tunes accompanied by romantic lyrics such as “I’ll be your music box, just wind me up and lean in close.” His performance went down parallel with the sun and lead into a short yet pleasant solo act by Noah Nite including “The Androids” an obvious and playful rendition to Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep a piece you might know better as the movie Blade Runner. Nite strummed along to the tune of Edith Piaf’s “La Vie en Rose” which resulted in a kitsch combination of both iconic pieces. Noah then switched roles from protagonist to drummer and passed his leading spot to Rafa Jo Harris and Max Johnson as they transformed into Rafa Jo and The Heavy Smokers. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the local singer and songwriter, Rafa Jo is a magician with words. She slithers out verses with quirky grace and goofy innuendos. Tuesday night was no exception Rafa Jo belched out a compilation of strategically interlaced stories that brushed the ephemerality of love and what follows thereafter. It was a true spectacle enhanced by a cool breeze and the crowd gamboling around as the trio played their closing songs. Evidently, the show was accompanied by Canvas’ charming location, a place that offers locals access to intimate gatherings in the heart of the Arts & Entertainment district. The cement-paved area bears a couple of trees and is decorated with Christmas lights and a stunning view of Miami high-rises. Their events usually cater to the foodie and music junkies. This time around refreshing brews were available as well as food trucks 221 Café and Samo Bistro with a variation of organic treats, burgers and such. If you’re interested, Canvas will be hosting a number of promising events in May that come free of cost with a simple reservation.

Miami Beach Celebrates 100th Birthday

By Angela Betancourt Photography by Mitchell Zachs On March 26th, thousands of people gathered on the sands of South Beach to celebrate Miami Beach’s 100th birthday. The city, in partnership with the Hard Rock, joined forces to host the Hard Rock Rising – Miami Beach 2015 Global Music Festival. The star studded concert featured Andrea Bocelli, Gloria Estefan, Wyclef Jean, Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, Flo Rida, and more. Though it was unusual to see such an unlikely collection of artists, the music line-up perfectly represented the melting pot that is Miami Beach. There was no denying it was a concert for the ages and a fantastic conclusion to several weeks of nonstop celebrations across the city. However, this anniversary was about more than just nonstop partying. The city, in partnership with local businesses and organizations, came together to celebrate the occasion in a variety of unique ways that reflects Miami Beach’s diverse cultural community. Several days leading up to the finale concert, Miami Beach Mayor Phillip Levine presided over a mass wedding of 100 people (50 couples) as a part of the 100 years celebration. Among the happily wed were same-sex couples who were finally able to get married legally in the state of Florida. Same-sex marriage became legal in the state at the start of the year, and this marked a historic milestone for Miami Beach’s LGBT community. The Art Deco Museum, founded by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) in Miami Beach, opened its doors to host the Miami Centennial Photograph Exhibition. Renowned professional photographer Johnny Arraiz, whose been recognized by the Congress of the United States of America for giving his invaluable service to the community, showcased his latest exhibition “Miami Beach, 100 Years, 100 Photos,” which immortalized special moments in the city’s history. This exhibit was one of many hosted by the museum to educate and engage locals and tourists alike on Miami Beach’s rich history. The Miami Beach Centennial celebrations became an extra special event for 100 men and women who passed their citizenship requirements and officially became citizens of the United States. Leon Rodriguez, Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officially welcomed these 100 new citizens after they swore allegiance to America. Representing more than 25 different countries, it was fitting to have this ceremony in a city that was built by immigrants from all over the world. Orchestra Miami and The Leroy Schecter Foundation celebrated the centennial with a free picnic concert that took attendees on a musical tour through the highlights of Miami Beach’s history. Orchestra Miami believes in the power of music to strengthen a community. Now in its 8th season, they provide high-quality classical symphonic music and programming that celebrates Miami’s diverse cultural heritage. In order to reach as many people as possible, Orchestra Miami events are almost always free. The Miami Beach Centennial was as much about celebrating its past and present, as it was about looking towards the future. As Miami continues to evolve as a global city and as its population continues to grow denser, its future becomes even more important. In a show of its dedication to protecting Miami Beach from the effects of climate change, the city announced during the celebrations, that it has begun developing a variety of initiatives to generate more awareness about global climate change. The city is also planning on creating an environmental summit hosted by the Mayor that will feature scientists, educators, and other influential leaders from different disciplines, coming together to discuss environmental advocacy. Miami Beach’s history helped define its foundation, but its present and all of the people, organizations, and businesses, who love the city today, will drive Miami Beach into the future and forward for another 100 years. Happy Birthday, Miami Beach.

Phil & Orianne Collins Cover Shoot & Interview

LITTLE DREAMS, BIG CONCERT By Katie Jackson  In February of 2000, a foundation brimming with a passion to provide a unique form of philanthropy and compassionate support was born. The Little Dreams Foundation, created by music legend Phil Collins and former wife and jewelry designer Orianne Collins-Mejjati, fulfills the dreams of children who do not have the means to achieve their desired goals in music, art, and sports. To say the foundation has been successful would be an understatement, as it has positively impacted over 300 lives, with participants going on to be famous guitarists, karate champions, Olympic athletes, singers, and more. Originating in Switzerland, Phil and Orianne have made it their mission to spread their foundation across the globe. After expanding to countries like Belgium and Morocco, the Little Dreams Foundation finally reached the United States this past year—with the first stop none other than the Magic City. After receiving numerous letters from children asking for help to fulfill their passions, Phil and Orianne decided that it was time to create an organization that not only provided monetary support, but also provided guidance and special individualized attention. “We thought instead of just sending checks, we should do better,” says Orianne. The program is aimed at young children between the ages of four and sixteen. An application must be completed on the Little Dreams Foundation’s website, and if selected, children are invited to audition. Once the children are chosen to be a part of the foundation, they receive a personalized program that specifically caters to their area of interest within the three categories of music, art, or sports. Participants can receive training courses, equipment, summer camps, complete coverage of hotel and traveling expenses, personal trainers or instructors, and so much more. “It’s full support,” says Orianne. Though the children are young when they join the foundation, they often stay with the program until they are well within their twenties. The foundation has been so successful that Phil and Orianne decided to create the LDF No Difference Program in 2003. The new program provides the same monetary support and guidance, but for children who are handicapped. “With the help of the foundation, we see that the kids are feeling so much better. It’s been a great success,” says Orianne. After announcing that the Little Dreams Foundation will be coming to Miami in a press conference at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel last November, and holding the first Miami auditions in March, both Phil and Orianne are excited to further the expansion. “The objective today is to be known in Florida, then state by state, and finally to be known across the U.S,” says Orianne. Until then, the foundation’s annual gala will be held at the Fillmore Miami Beach this December during Art Basel. Phil will lend his voice to the “Dreaming on the Beach Concert,” along with Latin superstars Laura Pausini and Alejandra Guzman, children from the foundation in The Little Dreamers band, and “lots of different surprises,” promises Orianne. “We love surprises!” Click here to view post on the November/December 2014 issue. Zen The Band Joins Forces with MTV & Rock Kulture

Photographed by Pierce Marratto MSM goes one on one with Juliette Cam, lead singer for Zen The Band MSM: Tell us a little about the history of your band. How did you get started? JC: We are actually very lucky as a band because we kind of just fell into place. My brother, Daniel (guitar) and I moved with our family to Biscayne Park in 1998. We then met the family of brothers Addison (drums) and Alex Smith (guitar) and also the family of Robert Bare (bass). We all grew up together and in 2005 is when Alex approached the rest of the guys about playing in a band. They agreed and that’s when Alex asked me to sing. Alex wrote the first song we that recorded and played called “fairytales” and that is how we got started practicing. MSM: Who are some of your music influences? JC: Some of our influences would be Radiohead, Chilli Peppers, Coldplay, Blind Melon, The Cranberrys, No Doubt, Metric, Pink Floyd, there are just so many influences that have inspired us to create our own sound. MSM: Do you plan to perform a mix of originals and covers for  the MTV and ROCK KULTURE event? Can you tell us a little more about this event? JC: For the Rock Kulture show, we plan to only play our originals. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation and Rock Kulture brought ZEN together with 7 other bands and 2 DJs to raise awareness and funds for HIV & AIDS prevention. The event takes place on Saturday September 21st in South Beach. It is an honor for us because it is also a ZEN reuninion show. We took a two year break as a band because we all had our own things going on, but thanks to this show ZEN is back in action. MSM: Does the band have any pre-performance rituals? What do you do to get ready for a big show? JC: Before most of our shows we get together in the garage at the Smiths house warm up, and go through the set. We also do a lot of goofing around to lighten the mood as it’s important to remember it’s for the enjoyment of the music and the amazing satisfaction we all get from playing. Once on stage we usually also huddle and say a little prayer to the universe to keep us tight. MSM: Describe the recording process.  JC: Our recording process has been different for our two cds. The first cd, was recorded at Dungeon studios where all five of us stayed all day for a couple weeks listening to each other record our parts. In order to get the right timing and sound we had to play all together so its a lot of repetition. Once the instrumentals are recorded I then lay my tracks last. The second cd, “By my Side”, we recorded in our own studio in the Garage. We had to work a lot harder to set up, edit, produce, ect. It was fun to record in the comfort of our own band “home” as we didn’t have a time frame and the pressures of studio expenses. MSM: Who had the final say on the group name? How do you feel the name coincides with your music style and overall performance style? JC: Alex originally had the idea for the name ZEN when he asked us to play together. As far as our sound goes we all write our own parts as we go, so it really is a blend of all our own artistic expression. In a way, our ‘ZEN’ is the ability to bring together 5 minds and create a union through music. The feeling of satisfaction the music gives us is something that comes from within all of us. Our ZEN look is pretty laid back, hippy, nothing too flashy or in your face, no shoes – Haha. The guys all had long hair at one point but I think it has shortened as we have grown up a bit. I wouldn’t say our music is something you would meditate to, its more like easy listening, a chill sound with a little bit of rocking out. MSM: What are some of the biggest gigs you’ve played so far? JC: We have played at so many venues in Miami but one our favorite places to play would be Churchills. We have played there the most and it feels like home. We also enjoyed playing at different colleges like Miami Dade, Broward College, New College in Sarasota, and Nova Southeastern. I’d have to say this show with MTV has to be the biggest so far, we are stoked to be part of the production team and cause. I feel like we have also matured as a band and are better musicians at this point so it will be our best show yet. MSM: Tell us your favorite things about Miami! JC: Our favorite things in Miami… hmm lets see, well of course there’s the beaches!! The diversity and blend of so many cultures makes it so awesome. Being open to different people and exposed to different lifestyles broadens the perspective. The art scene is another aspect of Miami we love as we are all artistic in the band and have much appreciation for it. Get your tickets Now to Rock Kulture!
