Tyla Durden on Miami

Tyla Durden is taking the post modern music scene by storm. After MTV Europe started to air her video “SexLoveMusicFashion”, Tyla Durden became an instant sensation. Her new Album TH3 OR1G1N4L is hyped as a masterpiece and her talents are validated in many arenas: she is a highly published photographer with top ad campaigns under her belt, a praised stylist, director, writer, musician and simply a woman with great vision. Almost the minute the Swiss beauty dropped her new post-modern Album, she got the attention of the US music scene, hence Tyla living a jetset life now between two continents working on her first US tour and several high profile collaborations. We were so happy to learn that Miami was her place of inspiration and wanted to find out more. When in Miami you  may catch me at…. …the beach or in an art gallery. For example at Daniela Wicki’s Gallery Second Avenue in Wynwood. She’s Swiss Origin as well and I admire her art and influence. Or you may catch me of course at Art Basel… This Art fair has its roots as well in switzerland. You see, Switzerland and miami have a wonderful marriage in some case. The biggest misconception about Miami is… …that Miami is just about having a party. It’s much more than that. For me this place means a lot of inspiring emotions. When i first visit Miami in 2008 I had this warm, pure wanderlust feeling inside of me. Knowing I can reach everything. This creative, openminded and cool place is fullfilled with great ideas and innovative people. The last restaurant I enjoyed in Miami was…. …at the Otentic Fresh Food Restaurant, Washington Ave. Fresh food, a cozy atmosphere and I must confess – a little European flair – there I feel most comfortable. Portions are also for small European-bellies, like mine and the desserts are divine. You feel like God in France. What surprised me about Miami was… …that Miami Beach has the worlds largest Art Deco architecture collection. I always knew there are a lot of beautiful buildings along the beach, but I was surprised how many nice Art Deco photo subjects I would find there. Miami with it’s over 800 Art Deco Buildings represents art, architecture and culture. For me as a Photographer and Filmmaker is this pure inspiration. It’s not surprising that so many movies and songs are about Miami. Best reason to return to Miami aside from the weather? Miami is riding a wave of technology and optimism that brings smart and risk-taking heads from other cities and country’s to dare a new business. For example, I heard they would like to make a new Silicon Valley. I am very interested in technology, science, art and music. As head of a private company, I know how much courage it takes to create something. Risk tolerance, courage and a good idea are just the beginning. Lots of patience and determination are the prerequisites. I know Miami is a place where such forward ideas are allowed to grow. This is a great reason to come here again and again, to see what’s new. First time I became really curious about Miami was …? Sometime around 2001 I just finished my Art School in Switzerland and started my education as an Advertising Photographer. I started dreaming of Miami – because my Photographer Idol Helmut Newton made stunning pictures there at the beach which exerted a huge influence on me and my art to this day. Then I heard that the Art Basel takes place in Miami now, I also remembered the movies Bad Boys, Scarface, Donnie Brasco and that’s when I knew I had to go there. What happens in Miami stays in Miami…and  our magazine. Any  secret  or funny moment you ‘d like to share about you and this city? My funny moment: When I woke up after my first Night in a hotel at Miami Beach on Ocean Drive, I checked out if there is some hidden money behind my ceiling fan. I felt like I live a life in the Scarface movie. My secret: During the massive volcano eruption 2010 in Iceland, I had to stay in Miami 2 weeks more than planned because we couldn’t fly back. So we stayed after our 2 weeks of vacation 4 weeks total. We rent a hotel apartment in north Miami Beach. It was a spectacular decorated hotel, probably had its best times in the 1970s. We knew there where good parties going on in the good old Cocain Cowboys times. We stayed there and had a good time. Enjoyed the beach, we listened to a lot of music and I had to admit I tried out some drugs. But I never had a desire to do drugs consistently. So it was a onetime adventure. I’m an Artist and a dedicated creative – I like to play hard, but I love to work harder.

Dr. Aaron Kosins holds a dual Medical Degree (M.D.) and a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) in Entrepreneurship. He is a highly credentialed expert on skin care, cosmetic dermatology, plastic and cosmetic surgery and medical aesthetics. He is also highly regarded for his expertise in Rhinoplasty and Breast & Body Contouring and frequently attends prestigious conferences around the world to speak about new techniques and technologies. In addition to operating a thriving surgical practice in Newport Beach, California, Dr. Kosins has trained extensively with acclaimed skincare pioneer, Dr. Zein Obagi and is a co-owner of ZO Skin Centre at Fashion Island, Newport Beach.  MSM caught up with Dr. Kosins for an in depth interview about plastic surgery, the dos and don’ts, the hype and the facts about non-invasive treatments and much more.   Why did you choose to become a plastic surgeon?  I chose to become a Plastic Surgeon because when I was a student, the Plastic Surgeons did the most incredible surgeries I had ever seen.  During the first surgery I ever watched, there was a patient that had a cancer of his jaw bone.  After it was removed, the guy had almost no jaw.  Then, I watched the surgeons transfer a patient’s leg bone to become their part of their jaw!  I thought, “How cool was that?  I want to be able to do that.” When women choose a plastic surgeon what are the key essentials to look out for? The number one essential is to look at your Plastic Surgeon’s reputation.  It is one thing to get a referral from a friend, but you want to make sure that he/she has a good reputation in the community AND in the medical community.  You can go online, look at reviews, view his/her website, etc.  Second, you want to make sure that the surgeon is a specialist in the particular procedure that you want.  In my practice, I specialize in rhinoplasty as well as breast and body contouring.  You can go on my website and look at hundreds of before/after photos.  The surgeon should understand your wishes, be able to communicate well, and then show you dozens of patients that he/she has worked on with your same issues. You are known as one of the best there is in the field of the so called “nose-job”. While the excellent ones can not even be spotted we see way too many bad ones or one that leaves the face more symmetrical but also more boring with no edge. What’s important about getting the right nose job and what is unique about your approach? Rhinoplasty is a true specialty within Plastic Surgery.  It is the most difficult operation that we do, and every single nose has different features that require a more sophisticated way of creating a beautiful result.  If you are interested in getting a rhinoplasty, you need to do your homework and go to a rhinoplasty specialist – a surgeon who devotes more than 50% of his/her practice to this operation.  Look at the doctor’s before/after photos and credentials.  Make sure he/she is board certified.  Look at the educational piece, meaning that you want a surgeon that is on the cutting edge of the specialty.  I spend one week out of every month either lecturing nationally or internationally.  I then spend time with the best surgeon in that state or country.  Learning and improving is the most important thing a rhinoplasty surgeon can do.  He/she should also be an active participant in forwarding the specialty.  As the editor of the rhinoplasty section of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, I see all the news advances coming across the board.  This is hugely beneficial in making sure that I keep getting better and better. Two new things about my approach that are unique are Piezosurgery and the treatment of patients with difficult skin.  I no longer “break” my patients’ bones.  Piezosurgery is an existing technology that we have just now started to use in rhinoplasty.  Small saws are used that cut bone but not skin.  So I can move a patient’s bones (to narrow or straighten the nose) without trauma.  This is more accurate and causes less swelling and bruising.  Also this year I have been giving a lot of lectures on treating people who have thick and oily skin.  These patients often get suboptimal results because the skin acts like a thick blanket and little definition can be seen.  Using creams and sometimes medication I have been able to shrink the soft tissue/skin of the nose and this has been proven with ultrasound.  Both of these things are totally new and exciting to offer to my patients. What about the non-surgical nose job many doctors offer now which only uses derma fillers to shape the nose? I am not a fan of this for a few reasons.  First, the nose is full of blood vessels and in the wrong hands, filler can cause whole subunits of the nose to turn black and die!  At every rhinoplasty meeting I go to there is lectures on how to deal with filler complications.  Also, filler is soft and the nose consists of bone and cartilage.  The unique definition of the nose can’t really be achieved by injecting soft, gelatinous material.  Even in the best hands these procedures need to be repeated 2-3 times per year.  If you think about this, it is extremely expensive over time with suboptimal results.  Because of this, I have NEVER put filler in the nose.  In fact, I am seeing a whole new group of patients who need surgical rhinoplasty after having bad “non-surgical” or filler rhinoplasty.  I have to melt the filler (if possible) before surgery or remove it during surgery before I can create the ideal nose. We all see there is a great push by beauty docs to get more biz by pushing non-suriginal procedures, some of those patients then later stay with that doc for surgical procedures. What is your take on this? In general, I just don’t buy it.  The face ages in 3 ways – the skin ages,

10 Orthopedic Injuries You Need To Know About Before Tee Off with Dr. Alejandro Badia

Orthopedic Surgeon to the Golf Pros, Alejandro Badia, MD, FACS, Sheds Light on the Top 10 Orthopedic Injuries Impacting Golfers Although originated in Scotland in the 15th century1, golf has been embraced by nearly 30 million Americans coast-to-coast ever since, adding roughly $70 billion a year to America’s economy.2 It is increasingly popular and serves as a fabulous de-stressor, but did you know that there are 10 orthopedic injuries that commonly occur when golf is not played properly? Many do not. Orthopedic surgeon to the golf pros, Alejandro Badia, MD, FACS and Founder and Chief Medical Officer of OrthoNOW®, the nation’s only network of orthopedic urgent care centers, shares his insights. Dr. Badia is a highly respected and sought out hand and upper extremity surgeon that has a strong connection with golf, having treated some of the best players in the world including renowned Peruvian PGA players Sebastian Salem and Hector Gonzalez, Sean Edey one of the top junior Caribbean players from Barbados and #80 French golfer in the world, Perrine Delacour on whom Dr. Badia successfully performed an arthroscopic procedure on her wrist followed up by ARPwave Neuro Therapy that got her back to the game after only three months. With this beneficial information, golfers can be more mindful of their body position and their swing while on the green. The top 10 most common orthopedic golf injuries include: 1. Golfer’s Elbow: Also referred to as “tennis elbow,” this is a condition aggravated by overuse of the arm, forearm and hand muscles that result in elbow pain. The term came into use because it can be a significant problem for some tennis players. “Golfer’s elbow” refers to the same process occurring on the inside of the elbow. Some people have an underlying tendency towards developing these conditions, which then become aggravated with overuse. 2. Back Strain/Disc Herniation: The vigorous twisting and core energy expended in the golf drive can cause soft tissue injury to paraspinal muscles, which are next to the spine and direct motion of the core or trunk area, or even to the discs between the vertebral which may lead to pain, weakness, tingling, muscle pain and spasms. 3. Rotator Cuff Tear: This may be caused by an injury to the shoulder, or due to progressive degeneration or wear & tear of the tendon. Symptoms include pain and extreme stiffness when raising your arm above your head or when moving your shoulder. Too many repetitive rotations at one time can strain the ligaments and muscles in your shoulder. 4. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This is caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist. Things that can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome include: hypothyroidism, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, obesity, wrist injuries and bone spurs and smoking because it can reduce blood flow to the medial nerve. Patients should see an orthopedic specialist if they are experiencing tingling, weakness, or pain in the fingers or hand that keeps coming back or that has not gone away after 2 weeks of home treatment. A common misconception is that typing or texting causes carpal tunnel syndrome. Although these can certainly aggravate the symptoms, typing or texting alone does not cause carpal tunnel syndrome. 5. Ankle Sprain: A sprained ankle is an injury that is common within activities or sports which involve a high level of jumping, pivoting and running. It’s an injury to one of the ligaments in your ankle and although ligaments are flexible, all it takes is a sudden twist for them to stretch too far or snap entirely. 6. Plantar fasciitis: This is the most common cause of heel pain. It is caused by repeated strain on the plantar fascia, the ligament that connects the heel bone to the toes, supporting the arch of the foot. A strained plantar fascia causes weakness, swelling, and inflammation in one or both heels. 7. ACL Tear: Knee injuries, much like ankle injuries, occur in activities involving quick turns, abrupt stops and starts, or unpredictable motions. Hearing a pop or experiencing a sharp pain in your knee after taking a hard turn may mean that the ACL was injured. An ACL tear makes it difficult to bend the knee, and people often suffer a feeling of instability when standing. 8. Meniscus Tear: This is a very common knee injury among professional athletes and the elderly. The meniscus helps the knee joint carry weight, glide and turn. This is usually caused by twisting or turning too quickly when the foot is planted and the knee is bent. This injury often causes the knee to be in pain, lock, click and swell. 9. Stress Fractures: These types of injuries are overuse injuries. Muscles become fatigued and they are no longer capable of reducing the shock of repeated impacts. When this happens, the muscles transmit the stress to the bones. Over time, those affected bones can no longer repair themselves organically, leading to small cracks or fractures. 10. Distal Radius Fracture: Commonly known as wrist fractures, these occur when you fall on an outstretched hand. In some cases, a cast may be all that is necessary to treat these injuries, but these fractures tend to be unstable and usually require surgical treatment. In today’s age, whether you’re a weekend warrior or a professional athlete, proper form and technique can help you take care of your body now, and build healthy habits for the future. There is a new technology that until recently was only used by elite athletes but is now available to the public at OrthoNOW® called ARPwave Neuro Therapy, which dramatically alleviates acute and chronic pain and expedites recovery from surgery. ARPwave is a system comprised of a proprietary electrical device with carefully designed protocols which target injury at the source and has been use to prevent injury and to condition and prep the body to endure the physical commitment that’s required of the activity being experienced by the patient. The technology can help improve your game by improving range of motion and it

Nicole Williams from WAGS on E!

Written by Gisel Habibnejad Cover Photo and Photography by Josh Ryan Makeup Artist by Janelle Faretra Styling by Kat Lozhnikova For anyone who stays up to date with pop culture, it’s no secret Nicole Williams is taking the modeling industry by storm. Never shying away from a busy schedule, she also stars in the hit reality television series WAGS on E! The show follows the lives of Williams and her cast mates through which viewers experience a glimpse into the exclusive lives of wives and girlfriends of professional athletes. Williams has been dating Larry English, an NFL defensive end, for close to five years now. “I think our relationship is very relatable to a lot of people who watch.” Prior to WAGS, Williams had already made a name for herself as a professional model. “My mom used to put me in classes so I could get a better feel for being in front of the cameras and I LOVED it!” Her first big break was her Bonne Bell Cosmetics campaign in Canada. A model on a mission, Williams has struck numerous deals throughout her career—her latest being an ad campaign with PETA. In an effort to raise awareness for animal cruelty, she was honored to team up with PETA for a special cause. “It was amazing working with PETA, honestly a dream come true for me,” shares the vegan. “If I can use this little bit of fame for one thing, it’s to spread awareness all around the world.” The ad campaign hones in on the gruesome reality animals undergo in the leather making process. PETA encourages consumers to opt for vegan leather instead of real leather. Vegan fashion goods can be found at top brands such as Stella McCartney and Free People. The Canadian-born beauty has also been busy modeling for other campaign ads. Earlier this year, Williams posed for the luxury lingerie brand Agent Provocateur’s Aphrodisiaque perfume ad. Skincare has always been important to Williams, so naturally, partnering up with BodyBlendz was a match made in heaven. The premier natural body scrub brand created a Coffee Scrub inspired by Williams’ own beauty regimens. “I used some of my favorite scents that I use at home, it’s so good for your skin to exfoliate, it gets rid of dry dead skin and keeps your skin radiant and smooth.” Some of the vital ingredients used to make the scrub include coffee beans (great for minimizing the appearance of cellulite) and sea salt (leaves skin feeling soft). In addition, together with BodyBlendz, Williams will be launching a new tropical and beachy mist called Mandarin Mist. Poised to conquer the fashion world, Williams will be launching a swimwear line this summer called Nia Lynn. The collection will consist of three bikinis and three one-pieces, staying true to this summer’s hottest trends like mesh, strappy features, and neutral colors. You can keep up with Williams by watching WAGS Sunday nights at 10:00pm only on E! “You definitely don’t want to miss this season because there’s a few surprises in store for everyone!! It gets really exciting.” You can also follow her on social media (@justtnic), to get sneak peeks of her swimwear line.

My Miami: On Brexit Poll Day, Wall Street Expert Larissa Posner…

Photo by Lars Gerhardt Photography By Nadja Atwal On Brexit Poll Day, Wall Street Expert Larissa Posner Was Grateful We Gave Her A Break From Market Prognosis and Instead Picked Her Brain About Miami. On her last business trip, Larissa Posner visited seven cities in five days, meeting with fund managers, investment advisors, private bankers, and high net worth individuals, often consulting in light of the uncertainty of Brexit and other issues facing the world markets. Guiding asset allocation, both domestically and abroad is her métier. As often the custom, they all wanted to discuss their financial futures over a meal. Fitting thirteen lunches into five days is a highly improbable hat trick, but Larissa states that with flexible schedules, a large appetite and a pair of sneakers it was completely doable and she considers that a slow week. This high octane, force of nature, has been killing it on Wall Street for nearly decade. Not often does an international fashion model go from the runway to corporate hallways, but Larissa wanted to take control of her earnings and soundly invest without being reliant on others. After studying portfolio construction, quantitative analysis, economic theory, and risk management, Larissa passed her Series 65 and took a job at a large Greenwich, Connecticut Hedge Fund where she quickly assumed a vice-president role in the company. From that point on there’s been no turning back for Larissa. Consulting in Corporate Access for the past four years, Larissa has also found time to create an Investment Advisor firm with feet planted in both ends of the spectrum. With fundamental strategies and analysis, a team devoted to machine learning research, and tax-efficient wealth planning, Larissa’s days go deep into the night. When she’s not in the office, in transit, or on the phone, Larissa enjoys hosting dinners for friends and family and hanging out in her vegetable garden. In short, this woman is on the move and loves Miami for both business and pleasure. We founded to find out more… 1.) When in Miami you may catch me… At one of my favorite locales, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. The entire place is intricately designed to transport you to another world. When I’m not in the mood for the hustle and bustle of the city, this is my comfort zone. You don’t have to cross the pond to experience 17th and 18th century France and Italy. 2.) The biggest misconception about Miami is… Miami is only for good for Spring Breakers, partygoers and plastic surgeons. The city is so far from that! Miami is a cultural microcosm teeming with events for all walks of life. From South of Spice to the World Golf Championship and Coconut Grove Arts Festival, the city really does cater to entrepreneurs, socialites and families alike. 3.) The last restaurant I enjoyed in Miami was… Los Fuegos at Faena Hotel. As someone who cooks myself, I love to discover sophisticated flavors. I wish I could learn Chef Mallman’s secret to the grilled octopus and Kurobuta pork belly there. Scrumptious! The food and decor transport me to Argentina every time. 4.) What surprised me about Miami… It’s as much a financial hub as it is an epicenter of diversity. A business luncheon at Juvia isn’t “work” when I can talk shop, have an amazing lunch, grab a quick confection at Dylan’s, peruse art at Peter Lik’s and finish the day with a performance at New World Symphony that evening. In Miami, business IS pleasure. 5.) Best reason to return to Miami aside from the weather? Miami is the place where the crème de la crème of the culinary universe converge. It’s the desired hot spot for extensions of some of my favorite international restaurants–Koya, Zuma, Milos and Hakasan, to name a few. Plus, The Food TV Network’s Wine and Food Festival brings together the “who’s who” of the culinary world to Miami for an unbelievable weekend each February. The city is a chef’s paradise and a virtual dreamland for epicures like myself. 6.) First time I became really curious about Miami was… When I heard about the Miami City Ballet Company’s Underwater Ballet! If I wasn’t sure Miami was a trendsetter before, I certainly knew after seeing that. Traveling around the world, I’ve seen some beautiful performances, but this one is stellar. It’s an unforgettable experience that had me longing for all the innovative adventures Miami has to offer. 7. ) What happens in Miami stays in Miami…and our magazine. Any secret or funny moment you’d like to share about you and this city? On one trip to Wynwood, I stopped at a gallery to peruse what was on display. I noticed a black and white still-life photography exhibit of rocks. I’d say it was “common chic”, if you catch my drift. Anyway, as I walked toward the exit, I saw a framed photo of the most precious, full-of-life, happy-go-lucky dog. I was staring and smiling at the adorable photo when another viewer approached me and asked what I thought about the exhibit. I replied, “I love it! It’s so cute and full of life; I just want to take that dog home and cuddle with him!” Well, it turned out that the stranger was the actual artist. He glared at me and mumbled through his teeth, “I traveled around the globe with the most technologically-advanced camera and light equipment and a crew of five assistants, walked through canyons, climbed up mountains and crossed streams to get perfect shots of these magnificent stones…and you stand in awe of my Labrador Retriever photo that I snapped with my iPhone. Thanks.” I felt so bad, but honesty is the best policy, right??

BloggerBuzz: Hugueth Galo on Best Foundation For Your Skin Type

Photo Credit: UrbaneWomen.com By Hugueth Galo/Beauty & Fashion Blogger If there is one thing that simply does not look cute it’s spotty, caked up make up. The number one reason this happens is because you’re not using the right foundation for your skin type. But don’t give up just yet! I have taken it upon myself to try out different foundations on different skin types to help you find the one to give you flawless coverage all day. Normal Skin Having a normal skin type means that your face will not get too oily or too dry. If you’re lucky enough to have this skin type, your biggest concern is using a foundation that will give you flawless skin. Make Up Forever Ultra HD Foundation leaves the face looking air brushed. The formula is buildable to give you full coverage while still looking like your own skin. If so, then your combination skin is one of the hardest to battle. A water-based foundation would be perfect because it will give you moisture but not oil. It’s important for this foundation to have the ability to build up coverage for dryer areas and keep oily zones on the sheer side. Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea foundation is perfect for this because of it’s lightweight, has the ability for full coverage, and has SPF 15 sunscreen. Your foundation should have a healthy amount of oil and moisture to keep your face looking bright and glowing. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Foundation gives you that healthy, luminous skin that you crave. Photo Credit: YSL Beauty Website Oily Skin No matter how hot, cold, humid, or normal the weather is, oily skin will show it’s ugly face and ruin your beautiful make up. This is my personal torture, so believe me when I say I feel your pain on this one. Living in Miami, I don’t just worry about my oily skin but also the humidity that triggers the oil. The best foundation for oily skin is one that will not add extra oil but also won’t cake up when your own skin oils release. MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation stays on all day with minimal oiliness. I know powder foundations don’t give as much coverage as liquid foundations but hey, that’s what concealer is for!  Make sure to conceal those places that you don’t want to be seen and add MAC’s powder foundation over your whole face, trust me it works!
