The Filling Station: Reimagining American Bar Food

By Alyse Mier The Filling Station is quite the institution, dedicated to making the best bar food in the area. A long-time fixture in Miami, it recently found a new home in Oakland Park, it’s still dedicated to taking the typical hamburger and making it anything but typical. With over 60 food items to choose from on the menu and a selection of over 30 craft beers, it’s no doubt you’ll need a few minutes to process everything. Below is a list of some must have menu items: The Lazy Sunday An unusual blend of S’tart sour beer and Sprite makes for one of the most refreshing drinks, which is perfect for this South Florida weather. The Beer Flight Having trouble navigating through the beer options? Bartender, Mitchell Feigeles, will create a personalized beer flight based on your preferred flavor profile. He’ll also create a flight of the best creations brewed by local breweries. Sweet Corn Fritters Imagine popcorn reinvented. These sweet corn fritters are perfect little portions of creamed corn fried to golden perfection and served with their made in house Savannah Sauce. Porky Tots The Filling Station’s claim to fame is their tots. Their beloved Porky Tots are fried to perfection with a crunchy, salty surface and a steamy, fluffy filling. The tots are blanketed with a layer of smoked pulled pork, cheddar cheese sauce and sour cream. The Burgatti Burger Aptly named, the Burgatti because the chef thought of anything you could possibly want or need in a burger. This Sargento award-winning burger is topped with two slices of pepper jack cheese, two slices of cheddar cheese, peppered bacon, balsamic caramelized red onions, garlicky mustardy mayo and a sunny side up egg. To explore the vast menu options visit The Filling Station at 3200 NE 12th Ave, Oakland Park

DELPOZO Fall Winter 2015 Collection

By Gisel Habibnejad DELPOZO has done it again this season. The fall winter 2015 line is infused with artistic inspiration drawn from Australian artist Rhys Lee and Russian painter Andrey Remnev. Creative Director of the brand Josep Font, whose ultimate goal was to allude to the pre-Raphaelite spirit with a modern twist, spearheaded the successful interpretation through his artistic eye. Although showcased with a trendy twist, DELPOZO stays true to its signature “architectural tailoring.” The collection is made of pieces perfect for day or evening wear. A detail favorite, geometric shapes by metallic lining, is displayed on a black base of a few pieces. A standout hit at NYFW fall, DELPOZO displayed a true stroke of genius. Wake Up Your Skin with Frank Body

By Gisel Habibnejad Chances are you’ve seen people all over social media posting photos of themselves covered in ground coffee beans. No, this isn’t dirt—these “Frankfurts” are positively and actively exfoliating their skin with Frank Body. Why coffee beans? Frank Body has discovered that not only can coffee be used to wake you up mentally, but by rubbing smashed coffee beans on your skin it can also benefit from it. The coffee-based ingredients range from “freshly roasted and ground robusta beans to green coffee extract.” They are also strict with only using natural ingredients: coconut oil, cinnamon, and mint extract—just to name a few. The Australian-made products have recently branched out into other products, such as a facial moisturizer, a wash, and a scrub. These products are designed to cater to acne, dryness, fine lines, and sensitive skin. However, Frank Body stands out amongst the many facial remedies as it also targets skin conditions like eczema psoriasis. Begin with the daily Creamy Face Cleanser rejuvenates skin, stimulates blood flow, detoxifies clogged pores, absorbs oil, and reduces redness. For a deeper clean, use the Creamy Face Scrub 2-3 times per week. The formula is ideal for dry and flaky skin with coconut, sweet almond, and grape seed oils. It also strengthens, tones, and repairs skin to a smoothening perfection. Finish with the Everyday Face Moisturizer for a healthy glow and ultimate hydration. The natural ingredients combat dryness without clogging pores. Photography Courtesy of Frank Body For more information, visit us.frankbody.com

Coconut Grove Welcomes a New Dining Experience: 33

By Justina Coronel Coconut Grove has just been sprinkled with a bit more flavor. A new refreshing dining experience, called 33, opened its doors on Saturday, December 5th, 2015. This Peruvian influenced theme will give guests true quality of delicious flavors with no more than six ingredients, as “attention to taste” is Chef Sebastian Fernandez’s key ingredient to his own success. The menu will even change depending on availability, which will bring a variety not only to the menu but also to the palate. Chef Fernandez and his wife, Leslie, transformed the place into more of an open and inviting space for guests to enjoy. Walking in, guests will be able to notice the large illuminating sign behind the bar titled ‘SED,’ meaning thirsty in Spanish; the bar itself was even designed by Fernandez using reclaimed wood from pallets and copper. To Fernandez, the name ‘33’ means more than the grove’s zip code, which is ‘33133’, but more a sense of belief, in which he truly believes that the number is lucky. But, the food that Fernandez provided is more than just luck. His touch in coordinating flavors together is a special skill providing guests a pure tour of Peruvian flavors and the use of international techniques and influences. Two dishes include classics such as the causa limena and the ceviche de corvina. The causa limena incorporated purple potato, fresh ahi tuna, avocado, and aji Amarillo sauce. The standard Peruvian dish, the ceviche, had lime, ginger, cilantro, red onions, and aji Amarillo for a bit of a kick. The plates are meant to share in order for guests to try all the different types of tastes flourished into the recipes. Make sure to attend 33 because after tasting these Peruvian dishes, you will truly feel lucky. 33 is located at 3195 Commodore Plaza in Coconut Grove

Red Dot Art Fair: One of Miami’s Leading Art Fairs

By Alyse Mier Red Dot Art Fair, one of Art Basel and Miami Art Week’s leading shows, returned to Miami this past weekend for its 9th edition. Its new location in the Arts and Entertainment District served as the temporary home for modern and contemporary works of art. This event has served as a platform to introduce enthusiasts and collectors to established, mid-career and emerging artists, much like Benjamin Edelstein. Edelstein, a Miami native, specializes in both fine art and commercial photography. His work has been published in several advertising campaigns, and graced the pages of leading magazines such as Vogue. Red Dot gave Edelstein the opportunity to present his work side-by-side to exquisite and sometimes bizarre works of art. “I’ve seen some pretty cool contemporary work around here. I’m a fan of mixed media. Anything that has to do with more than just photography or painting, or finding ways to incorporate both I’m usually a pretty big fan of,” said Edelstein. Red Dot’s vast collection of modern and contemporary art did not disappoint as fairgoers made their way through the over 70 galleries that exhibited numerous sculptures, paintings and photographs. “This is my second year here at Red Dot and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. Long days, long hours, but what I appreciate most about being here is that I not only get to see a lot of the galleries that are present, but I get to meet a lot of the artists that aren’t from around here,” said Edelstein. SWAY: A Dance Trilogy

By Alyse Mier Photography by Stefania Orru Latin ballroom dancing champion Maksim Chmerkovskiy, known by millions for his performances on Dancing With the Stars, brought some ballroom dancing heat to Miami this week with the opening of SWAY: A Dance Trilogy. Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, and Tony Dovolani were joined by DWTS professional Peta Murgatroyd, Olympian Meryl Davis and actress Rumer Willis for a five-show run at the historic Olympia Theater in downtown Miami. SWAY gave the audience a glimpse into the lives of Maks, Val and Dovolani and their varied talents in dance genres such as conventional ballroom, hip-hop, rumba, salsa and cha cha. “SWAY was born because we had the opportunity to do it. It was choreographed in-house by two of our Dance With Me choreographers and the cast was made up of over 70 employees from our six locations. It quickly became a show that was bigger than us and we decided to do it two more times. Now we’re in Miami performing only five shows during Art Basel,” said Maks. Maks and Dance With Me Studios have partnered with Alfalit in efforts to eradicate human suffering caused by illiteracy. Dance With Me Studios has used its platform with SWAY to help create awareness for this cause. A percentage of ticket sales from SWAY, associated golf tournament and dance camp benefitted Alfalit International. “Without education we wouldn’t be able to do what we do, so I wanted to be able to give back to people who don’t have that opportunity themselves,” said Maks.
