Stone Crab Season is here!

It’s that time of the year again!  Our delectable Stone Crab Season has begun.  The season runs from October 15th to May 15th.  Stone Crab claws can be enjoyed throughout our city from some of our finest restaurants, such as the iconic Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach, to grocery stores such as Whole Foods Market. In case you didn’t know, here are some interesting facts about  Crustaceans… *The stone crab’s claws are formally known as “Chelae.” *The claws do grow back so long as the joint is left in place.  *The female’s body, her “carapace” is larger than her male counterpart. However the males do have the larger claws. *One of the predators that feeds on them is “the human”.  Sorry, but these claws are just too good. If you enjoy crab’s, these are a MUST! One taste and you will be hooked.  Oh, and don’t forget to accompany them with the savory mustard sauce! Photo courtesy of Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant

Monica Hansen Endless Summer

One on One with swimwear designer, Monica Hansen By Nadja Atwal / Photos by Cameron Hammond 1.) You went from being a super successful swimwear model to now being the new rising star as a swimwear designer. How did you do it? I have always had passion for design and fashion.  It was a very natural transition for me. I started doing drawings and illustrations at a very young age. I started my swimwear company about 2 years ago, and since then I’ve been a full time designer. 2.) Few markets are as competitive as the swimwear market – what sets your designs apart from the competition? I think there are a few key factors that sets our line apart from others . We manufacture in Italy and all our fabric and trim suppliers are Italian. Most swimwear companies manufacture in China and other countries. The fabric and workmanship that Italy provides is far more higher quality in comparison to other countries when it comes to swimwear. I have also structured the line, so that there is 5-6 options for tops you can mix match with 5-6 options for bottoms. We sell our tops and bottoms separately. We carry sizes XS to XL. We all are built different. Some people are S bottom  large top or vs. Most swimwear companies do not provide you that many options of tops and bottoms to mix match. The other benefit about that is that a customer can by two tops and one bottom, then have two sets of bikinis that looks different. 3.) What are the trends for now and which trends are here to stay in your view? The trends are little bit of 80’s and 90’s vibe. It’s very body and fitness focus cuts and trims. The suits and bottom have more of high waisted cuts, which makes your legs look long. Colors are black, white, nude.. You will see a lot of pastel and also yellow for the coming season. This trend will carry over to the next season. 4.) The supermodels and Hollywood crowd love your designs. Kindly tell us about one of your favorite instagram’s from a celeb in MH and why do you love it so much? I love Beyoncé in our Pineapple suit and also Christie Brinkley. Beyoncé because it’s just her style and it fits her perfectly. Christie Brinkley because she still rocks our smallest suits at 63.. She just amazing!! 5.) Not everyone has perfect curves and your designs are so far more on the revealing side. Can we also expect swim dresses or retro style designs a la Monica Hansen for extra coverage but as much sex appeal? Yes, we are planning to expand our collection starting next season with more ready to wear clothing (dresses, coverups and other clothing) 6.) What is your favorite destination in Miami for playing the beach queen or pool bunny? (name the hotel/resort and why) I love the Edition hotel ! It’s such an amazing hotel. Modern and so cool. They even have an ice skate ring in the basement. It’s so much fun. I had my models last season ice skating with bikinis. Also their pool is a site to see. Something magical about that hotel.

BloggerBuzz: A Tel Aviv fashionista making the best of Miami

Fashionista Michal Harel’s travel diary about her first time experience in Miami. Dealing with the city vibes she compares Miami to her own home town of Tel Aviv. Michal reviews her adventures in Miami and fashionable spots that she recommends to other travelers who visit. Visiting Miami for the first time was an extraordinary experience. As a fashion blogger who lives in Israel and is passionate about travel and lifestyle, I find it interesting to discover new destinations, since traveling makes people grow in a way that it turns them mature. So how does it happen? Well I chose my flight spontaneously to Miami, picked up my bags and entered the other side of the world. Landing at the airport, I felt very curious to find out about the culture of this amazing city. When traveling to a new city, visitors struggle to find the right place to stay. It all depends on the budget and what type of experience each traveler wants. As for me, I wanted to be located in central Miami so that I would be able to walk everywhere within a distance. Finding a suitable place to stay is an important step as it has a significant impact on the overall quality of the trip.  There are two options to consider: 1. Airbnb – where visitors can stay with the locals which allow them to nourish deep into the culture. 2. Hotel – a more expensive option that provides personal services and facilities based on visitors needs. Epic Hotel Balcony View Lobby Roof Top Bay View   As a fashion blogger who travels a lot, it is important for me to choose a place that has the most of Miami’s views for capturing photos. I stayed at the Epic Hotel which is located in Downtown Miami. After receiving a warm welcome from their staff, I turned on my Ford Mustang and went on the road to absorb the city vibes. Watching the sea view on Ocean drive reminds me of my home town in Tel Aviv. That’s when I noticed that my culture was similar to Miami in a way that both cities have hot climate  which affects the way people dress and act. Just as Tel Aviv, I can say Miami is ‘the city that never sleeps’. “Miami feels like home, although I’m far away from Tel Aviv. I was amazed to discover the cities’ similarity.” Miami is all about fun and you can never get bored in this city. The streets are crowded with different cultures of people who value each other. Miamian’s shows a great sense of community. There are tons of roof bars, cafes and restaurants to visit such as Sugar Factory, Mango Tropical Cafe, the famous pizzeria Mister 01, and Full Bloom. These places are visited by many locals; therefore it’s great to experience Miami through their eyes. Sugar Factory Full Bloom Mango Tropical Cafe Mister 01 Fashion Walking the South beach area, I noticed that people were mostly wearing swim suits or dressed in a casual and laid back style. They believe – their priority is to feel comfortable with what they wear. Due to the favorable weather in Miami, people are able to lead a healthy lifestyle filled with fitness clubs and bike lanes – comparable to Rotchild Boulevard in Tel Aviv, which plays a big role in people’s appearance. That also reflects on Miami’s culture, where it is all about freedom of expression by accepting different cultures no matter what’s their race or gender – typical to Tel Aviv. Miami is one of the friendliest city’s that encourages mingling, connecting with other people, unlike other cities in the US such as New York or LA. Betsy Hotel South Beach Ocean Drive Art When traveling, I noticed that each city I have visited has their own form of art. One area in Miami called Wynwood is famous for its graffiti walls. The Wynwood Arts District is home to over 70 Art Galleries, Retail Stores, Antique Shops, Eclectic Bars, and one of the largest open-air street-art installations in the world that is worth the visit. Graffiti –also an art form of expression has been popular over many years as a way to leave imprints on a wall or simply to communicate with others by signing a wall with their names. Graffiti art is very popular among local artists. In Tel Aviv, The Wynwood District reminds me of the Neve Tzedek neighborhood in my home town as they’re both filled with graffiti walls. Llia Torlin Neve Tzedek Experience If anyone is visiting Miami for a short period of time, which does not allow them to experience all of the neighborhoods – then a Helicopter flight would be a good choice as visitors can observe and view the city from the air. Seeing Miami from the sky will give each an unforgettable experience, especially for those who want to overcome their fear and challenge themselves. What to expect: The feeling of courage, a stunning and breathtaking view, the mix of the sky and sea color tones from Miami’s beach strip, and an entire city that looks like mosaic. Throughout my trip to Miami I have realized its similarity to my city – Tel Aviv, and I can definitely say I had the greatest time of my life for the first time as a traveler fashionista. Whether it’s enjoying the amazing sunset by relaxing at the beach, getting a tan and shopping on the Lincoln Road, taking a private cruise to Star Island, riding a jet ski (and overcoming my biggest fears while doing that), or going out to fashionable clubs and restaurants such as Zumma and E11EVEN, Miami is a unique experience! I will miss this amazing city and surely be back again soon. As I always say when a vacation comes to an end… Till the next time! See you soon Miami 🙂 https://www.instagram.com/MICHALH1986/ https://www.facebook.com/MHfashionista/ https://twitter.com/michalh23 http://mhfashionista.com/

Bucket List: The Most Beautiful Restaurants In The World

By Nadja Atwal Want to add some spice to your bucket list? We’ve created a list of the very restaurants that will bedazzle all your senses and will make you crave for more. 1) Kong, Paris (France) When you know Philippe Starck was in charge of design, you know  to expect something exceptional. And in this case, not just spectacular interior that reminds you of a transparent UFO, but also breathtaking views: Pont Neuf, Henri Sauvauge’s Art Deco design of the Samaritan building, Art Nouveau by Frantz Jourdain, another one shows the Seine, another of the Louis Vuitton HQ for the severe fashion addict. 2.) Brix 0.1, Brixen (Italy) In the Dolomites’ picturesque Lido Park, Italian star architect Markus Tauber created a masterpiece that should really be referred to as a “piece of art”. Brix 0.1 has quickly become one the most popular restaurants in the country with people traveling for hours and hours for a relaxing breakfast, lunch or dinner here that would for sure end up in their diaries as on of those most memorable moments. 3.) Heritage, Hamburg (Germany) By the river in Germany’s gorgeous maritime metropolis Hamburg, a striking gourmet tempel inside the famous Le Meridien Hotel emerges as a must-see place that will impress your taste buttons and will trigger your wanderlust –  or at least your desire for a little spin with a sailboat on the river. Add the impressive interior and first class French cuisine with just enough Asian twist and you got yourself a must-have experience. 4.) The French Laundry, Napa Valley (USA) Many have heard of it but too few have seen it yet. The French Laundry is known as the Über-Restaurant for gourmets. But not just the food is outstanding. The restaurant itself and the way it is embedded in the beauty of California’s famous wine region, Napa Valley, is simply too stunning to miss out on. 1600 square-foot made of river rock and timbers  – made in 1900 – enveloped in gorgeous flowers and the best nature has to offer, makes us not just enjoy the food but daydream as well. 5.) Ossiano, Dubai (UAE) Not swimming but dining with sharks seems like an adventure worth trying. Nestled in the famous Atlantis Hotel on Palm Island, this underwater spectacle guarantees its guests unforgettable moments  – plus outstanding food. Among other awards it was named the most romantic restaurant in Dubai! While you indulge in your fresh lobster you watch mantas floating by and per request a diver will display a message from the other side of the giant glass wall just for you or your loved one.

Top 5 Items People Totally Forget To Tax Deduct

By Nadja Atwal Who is surprised that most people get on their tax returns during the last 3 weeks of the deadline. But if you are the last minute type, it’s okay – as long as you the smart type. Now when it comes to being smart with money, who better to ask than one of TV’s favorite money experts, asset manager Ken Mahoney. Between his market analysis on all the top TV and radio business shows and his signings of his latest bestselling book “ Life on your terms”, we caught Ken just in time to give us his  top 5 list of items people totally forget to tax deduct. 1. State sales taxes This write-off makes sense primarily for those who live in states that do not impose an income tax. You must choose between deducting state and local income taxes, or state and local sales taxes. For most citizens of income-tax states, the income tax deduction usually is a better deal. The IRS has tables for residents of states with sales taxes showing how much they can deduct. But the tables aren’t the last word. If you purchased a vehicle, boat or airplane, you get to add the state sales tax you paid to the amount shown in IRS tables for your state, to the extent the sales tax rate you paid doesn’t exceed the state’s general sales tax rate. The same goes for home building materials you purchased. These items are easy to overlook. The IRS even has a calculator to help you figure out the deduction, which varies by your state and income level. 2. Out-of-pocket charitable contributions It’s hard to overlook the big charitable gifts you made during the year by check or payroll deduction. But the little things add up, too, and you can write off out-of-pocket costs you incur while doing good deeds. Ingredients for casseroles you regularly prepare for a nonprofit organization’s soup kitchen, for example, or the cost of stamps you buy for your school’s fundraiser count as a charitable contribution. If you drove your car for charity in 2016, remember to deduct 14 cents per mile. 3. Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit A tax credit is so much better than a tax deduction—it reduces your tax bill dollar for dollar. So missing one is even more painful than missing a deduction that simply reduces the amount of income that’s subject to tax. But it’s easy to overlook the child and dependent care credit if you pay your child care bills through a reimbursement account at work. Until a few years ago, the child care credit applied to no more than $4,800 of qualifying expenses. The law allows you to run up to $5,000 of such expenses through a tax-favored reimbursement account at work. Now, however, up to $6,000 can qualify for the credit, but the old $5,000 limit still applies to reimbursement accounts. So if you run the maximum $5,000 through a plan at work but spend more for work-related child care, you can claim the credit on up to an extra $1,000. That would cut your tax bill by at least $200. 4. Medical and Dental Expenses If your medical and/or dental expenses are over 10% of your Adjusted Gross Income, or if you are over 65, they are 7.5%, over you AGI, it’s deductible. 5. Job search Expense Transportation, parking, tolls, preparing your resume, printing, agency fees are also all tax deductible. Plus, the annoying items we wish we could 1. Donations to Non-Qualifying Charities, like friends and family Giving to a good cause can help you out at tax time, but only if you’re making a donation to a qualified charity. Handing out cash to a friend or relative who’s struggling to find a job, for example, is certainly charitable. But it won’t help you score a tax break. 2. Pet Care Expenses Fluffy may seem like a member of the family. But that doesn’t mean you can claim him as a dependent or get a deduction for his day-to-day care. 3. Commuting Expenses While business-related travel expenses (including the cost of flights and hotel stays) may be deductible, ordinary commuting expenses are not. If you take a bus, taxi or subway to get to work each day, you can’t deduct those costs on your tax return as business expenses. You may be eligible for a deduction, however, if you’re paying to travel to a training session or conference held outside of your office. 4. The Loss on the Sale of your home A capital loss on the sale of your home, used by you as your personal residence at the time of sale is considered a nondeductible personal expense. You can only deduct losses on the sale of property used for business or investment purposes. The only way you can obtain a deduction if you sell your home at a loss is to convert it to a rental property before you sell it. However, your deductible loss will be limited 5. Home Improvement Expenses Home improvement expenses generally aren’t deductible. One exception involves the renovations you make to a home office. Not everyone can take the home office deduction. But if you have a legitimate reason for claiming it, you may be able to deduct the cost of any upgrades you’ve made to your home office. While you can’t qualify for a deduction for giving your kitchen a makeover or adding a new sunroom, these projects may raise your property value. If that happens, you can write off the additional property taxes that you have to pay. www.kenmahoney.com

Interview: Disney Junior’s Genevieve Goings

Interviewed by Destinee Hughes / Photo’s by Jacory Gums Genevieve Goings, the host of Disney Junior’s popular music video show “Choo Choo Soul,” knows exactly how to woo an all-age audience. Whether she’s using her charismatic personality to charm the children, writing music for Los Angeles’s top R&B and pop artist, or creating unique bow-ties and suspenders, Goings always exceed expectations in the most harmonious of ways. With a musical lineage, Goings had a natural inclination for singing from an early start. She began her career in San Francisco, focusing mainly on hip-hop and R&B, singing hooks for local artist. She eventually ventured off into recording voice-overs for popular toy companies such as Hello Kitty, Leapfrog, and many more. In April 2010, she and her skilled team created “The Happy Hearts Club,” a fitness show for kids exposing them to futuristic dance moves to help keep them engaged in physical movement. Goings has also worked with Fisher-Price on its “Little People” toy line. While she was initially approached to write a new theme song for the brand, her innovative ideas and dedication allowed her to write six additional songs and even provide the voice for the teacher, Miss Hugg, in the animated web-series. It’s safe to say that being the host for “Choo Choo Soul” for over a decade has certainly opened many doors for children’s market opportunities for Goings. Genevieve currently has her hand in numerous pots, including writing phonics curriculum’s for schools in China. Her latest venture is absolutely one worth looking forward to- an original line of bow-ties, ties, and suspenders for kids. If one thing is certain it’s clear that Genevieve is undeniably talented, and with fitting last name, she knows exactly where her future is going. Destiny Hughes: When did you realize that you wanted to be involved in the entertainment industry? Genevieve Goings: I have always had an interest in the Entertainment Business, and from a very young age I loved singing and performing. I didn’t, however, think that I could ACTUALLY do it as my profession until I finished high school and began recording in studios. Watching a song start as an idea and take on its own life; being pressed into CD’s, moving to radio and being produced into music videos, live shows, and more, I was hooked! DH: How do you balance working on so many projects at once? GG: I am still learning that perfect balance! I try to dedicate certain days to certain things, and mornings are always for emails and social media. I write all of my to-do’s on my calendar and just schedule my focus throughout the day. I add time for creative and goal-oriented items just as if they were an appointment. DH:  What interests you the most in children’s television shows? GG: I just love the fact that there is no wrong or right way to do it. Random silliness can totally work in the kids space. Children are so open, honest and willing to be entertained. It is truly the best job ever! DH: What has been the most satisfying part about your job? GG: I truly get to touch people’s lives with what I do. I have been on television regularly for over 10 years now, and those little babies who used to watch me are now grown and onto other things, utilizing those fundamentals that they learned from my songs! I love to hear from parents about how so many special memories were created with their families to my music. I have heard from parents of non-verbal autistic children saying that their children sing along to my music! It is truly incredible and so much more than me just wanting to be a “star,” this is real-life stuff that means something! DH: How does it feel when people recognize your voice from previous works? GG: Ahh, it’s the best! I feel wonderful if someone recognizes my voice!! That means I am on the right path and creating a brand! DH: Why is it important to you to keep children healthy and active with your “Happy Hearts Club” program? GG: Our habits that we form as children shape our lives and livelihood as we grow up! Childhood obesity, diabetes and more are silent villains that can cause major harm to our youth. I felt that since I have a direct portal to these kids and they know me as someone who the get up and dance with, it was my job to keep that flow going and help them exercise! DH: Tell us about the musical curriculum your writing for schools in China? GG: It is a little-known fact that Disney has created an initiative called “Disney English,” which teaches English as a second language in China and beyond. They have over 20 schools in China and I have written over 100 lesson songs for them, utilizing their target vocabulary and a bit of “Disney Magic.” I take the words and phrases that they are learning, and create a pop-style song in the theme of whatever Disney character or brand that the lesson exists in. For example, if the class is learning about “Time” in the style of “The Lion King,” I will write a song with African-inspired sounds and beats using the words that they require. It is such an incredible project and exercise for a songwriter! It is also magical to see the finished product, when they pair my song with clips from the classic films! DH: If you weren’t the host for Disney Junior’s Choo Choo Soul, what other career would you have? GG: This has been my focus for so long, I don’t even know how to answer that! But if I wasn’t on screen, I would be on my way to being an executive at Disney. If I wasn’t in the Children’s market at all, I would probably still be in the entertainment business, writing music for other artsts. I probably would have continued with the band that I was in (Legato; neo-soul R&B) and continued in the Video game voice-over industry.

Interview: Miami Power Woman, Lea Black

Interview by Nadja Atwal / Photography by Greg Lotus They say “It takes one to know one.” Therefore, we asked successful business woman and political commentator Nadja Atwal (who made headlines first after she was named sexiest power woman by a top US magazine) to interview one of Miami’s most prominent power women: Lea Black. Power some galore! Black became known to a large audience on the show “The Real House Wives of Miami” where to many she was the stand out class act, the one real lady with smarts and calmness in a pool of vanity and madness. Like our former cover model Joanna Krupa, she was already a success story before she joined the show and has managed to diversify her career by building her brand, becoming a bestselling book author and making her charity one where actual A-listers line up. And all the while making family life work as a devoted mom and wife. 1. Most viewers thought you were the voice of wisdom on The Real Housewives of Miami…What did you take away from your time on the show and the high dosage of female drama? Any new lessons learned? I learned some people will do anything for attention and it’s best to stay away from people that have nothing to lose. Drama and conflict can be interesting when it’s organic and based on fact with good intentions meant for true resolution. But when it gets dark, or it’s fabricated, it’s not interesting or entertaining. 2. Your tag line for Season 2 of RHOM was “I can deal with a lot of things but I can’t deal with stupid.” How did it come to that… too many run ins with incapable people? Yes! I even put it on pillows and a cosmetic bag that we sell at leablack.com I realized that when dealing with smart people that have something to gain and something to lose you can usually come to agreement or agree to disagree, and at least have stimulating conversations.  But people that think any means justify an end or that are stupid enough to say and do anything not thinking about long term damage are just not worth being around and in their crossfire. Smart people make life easier even when you disagree. Stupid people are short sighted and too stupid to even consider collateral damage and consequences. Trying to reason with stupid is a waste of time. I never want to be the smartest person in the room. I want to be around people smarter than me to learn from them and evolve. 3. As power women we are easily pushed in the corner of  being harsh even dudish and the label “bitch” comes easily into play. Yet you look very feminine, and are a loving mother and wife. Do people feel confused about you and how would you describe yourself? I think for the most part I am misunderstood. People don’t really know me they just think they do. And what I think of myself is far more important to me than what others think of me. I know I’m fair, honest, have integrity, keep my word and try to do the right thing. People can interpret my actions and words however they want to and twist them to suit their preconceived ideas of me but I don’t compromise who I am and what I believe to expose who others are. They usually do a good job of that on their own. I’m a pretty down to earth jeans and tee shirt simple girl that enjoys the good life but I’m not beholden to it or defined by it. I know the difference between being and doing, and that gives me peace of mind.   4. On twitter you are very outspoken about politics. Even though I could not disagree more with you on our president elect, I always enjoy your tweets and applaud you for your outspoken attitude. Now how are you dealing with friends and biz friends who like you very much but also like our newly elected president?  People have different political beliefs for different reasons. I’ve always fought for the underdog. Many times I feel I fight harder for them than they fight for themselves. I don’t believe a guy who has been as self serving as Trump has been for 70 years all of a sudden cares about the underprivileged and middle class. He pushes all of my buttons. Even if I agreed with him on policy his behavior disturbs me and I don’t trust him. He’s said too many things that in my opinion denigrate the office of the President and how we are perceived in the world. I’m truly hoping the people that favor him aren’t disappointed. Many Americans want the same thing and just have different ways of getting there. Then there are the haters and haters are gonna hate. Period the end. So I just ignore them and don’t have them in my life. 5. As a business woman you built a respectable little empire already. Skincare, handbags…how and why did this all start? I started my business in the 1980’s. I created some beauty products that I really believed in and still believe in today. Along with top chemists I created Sudden Youth, a non surgical face lift kit that tones, firms, tightens, lifts and has lasting results. I’ve built a worldwide organization of sales reps that wanted to be able to earn income based on their accomplishments rather than what someone was willing to pay them. Many of them became very high powered business people earning large incomes today based on the training and entrepreneurial skills we taught them over the years. I’ve used Sudden Youth since the first jar and I still use it today along with customers I’ve cultivated over the years. Ten facials for $95 is unquestionably the best skincare for the best price that I’ve ever known of. I now sell it online at leablack.com along with affordable handbags and fashion jewelry. And we export. It’s a

From Desk to Drinks: 2016 Holiday Edition

By: Dana Lyons, General Manager at My Home Fashion Boutique Dashing off for drinks after your 9-to-5? Surviving the holiday party circuit requires some wardrobe strategy, especially when it comes to post-work soirées and the race against time (thanks Miami traffic). Since going home to change isn’t always an option, I’ve put together a list of My Home Fashion Boutique’s favorite style hacks to take the stress out of desk-to-drinks dressing. The last thing you need slowing you down is your wardrobe! Wide leg Pant Silhouette When running from work to your next holiday party you want to feel fabulous without giving up comfort. Having the perfect pair of pants solves half the battle. Wide leg trousers in black or winter white not only look sophisticated for your staff meeting, but also transition beautifully when paired with a silk cami or sequined tank for your night out. Take a cue from B.O.N.D. and try the Siena Wide Leg Trouser, in black or winter white, on for size. Ditch the Office Wear, and Rock the Outerwear                     A fitted blazer is the classiest way to go topless this season. Yes, you read that right! If you’re feeling bold, follow in the fashionable footsteps of Hollywood’s finest like Rosie Hungtinton-Whitely and Rihanna and lose the office undergarments for a sexy, no shirt blazer look. Dare to go bare with a buttoned leather moto jacket by Gimo or fitted crop suede jacket by SEN. Add an ivory beaded necklace by David Aubrey or sandstone bracelets by Cindy Zale, and your outfit is complete. This edgy update to a classic power suit is the ideal way to show off your avant-garde taste effortlessly. Cap Sleeve Meets Color                     To keep your day-to- night transition minimal, go with a silk blouse.
