Aston Martin

HEART OF DARKNESS By Kevin F. Gbolie Many vehicle manufacturers today are looking to reinvent themselves to keep up with the times. However, Aston Martin is sticking to a timeless design with a hint of modern dark art in the 2015 version of the Aston Martin DB9 Carbon Edition. The DB9 Carbon Edition injects pure seduction to what the British manufacturer does best: Making a bold vehicle that stands the test of time. The DB9 Carbon Edition is set apart by being available in only two colors: Carbon Black and Stratus White. The color selection fits inline with the monochrome theme that Aston Martin is presenting with the Carbon Edition. The merging of a timeless theme with a timeless car. In addition to the color selection, The DB9 Carbon Edition comes in two body styles: the classic 2-door coupe, or the 2-door volante. Both styles are designed to fit the owner’s needs. Those with the coupe will look stylish pulling up to a high-profile event-looking equally as sharp as the DB9-while volante owners will have the wind in their hair as they drive alongside the ocean with the top down for a relaxed afternoon. To match the seduction of the exterior, The DB9 Carbon Edition has an equally alluring interior that Aston Martin describes as “the heart of darkness.” To show the heart of darkness, Aston Martin has encased the interior with premium black leather that is temptingly soft. This makes for a comfortable and lavish driving experience. In order to make the black leather stand out, flashes of color implemented in the stitching add another dimension for the DB9. The precise stitching holding the leather together comes in three colors: red, silver, or yellow. These colors add a subtle, but elegant pop to the interior. Aston Martin has added many finer details all over the vehicle to make it a truly exclusive model. From the piano black finish on the air vents and trim on the interior, to the black diamond-turned wheels, each selected exclusive finish only adds to the internal and external beauty of the vehicle. The DB9 Carbon Edition sets a premium standard of what a limited edition luxury car should be. The Aston Martin DB9 Carbon Edition is a work of art, but make no mistake, this is also a vehicle of power. Retailing at over $200,000.00, you get the power you pay for. Housing an AM11 V12 engine, this vehicle is capable of a sprint time of 4.6 seconds. Not to mention, it houses a carbon-fibre diffuser which improves the aerodynamic function of The DB9 by drawing air for under the car. This helps with the overall speed and performance of the car for the speed demons out there. Owning the Aston Martin DB9 Carbon Edition takes a person with a certain class, like James Bond. The MI6 agent who defined class in and of itself, drove an Aston Marton DB5 in Goldfinger. Step inside the Aston Martin DB9 Carbon Edition, and you may think you must be dreaming, too. 365 Days of Summer

By Monica Guessous Summertime, the season of sun kissed skin, golden hair, icy drinks and dinner on the boardwalk. Wonderful memories are created during the hot summer months. We become one with nature, and try to enjoy everything the summer has to offer. Miami, of all places, should be the definition of summer. We are blessed with 365 days of sunshine, along with beautiful beaches, delicious food and wonderful people. However, having the sun on our side all year around, leaves us vulnerable to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. These rays are the cause of premature aging of the skin, dark spots, deep wrinkles and even skin cancer can happen over time. So how do we care for and protect our skin from our dear friend and skin’s enemy the Miami sun? Understanding the effect of the UVA and UVB rays on our skin, will help us understand and protect it from further damage, it’s never too late to start. UVA rays, enter the skins deepest layer called Dermis, they are the causes of premature aging of the skin. UVB rays cause skin cancer, sun allergies and sunburn, because they penetrate the upper layer of the skin (epidermis). Protecting our skin is a must, and sunscreen is our skin’s best friend. However, not all sunscreens are created equal. Cosmetics companies are constantly searching for new ways to improve their formula. One company in particular is challenging the traditional idea of sunscreen, by creating a drinkable sunscreen. Impressive! But does it work? Harmonized h2o UV Neutralizer, is the world’s first drinkable sunscreen. The company claims, drinking one teaspoon of Harmonized H2O UV neutralizer will give wearers a factor 30 protection. They go on by explaining, that their product works by molecules vibrating on skin, canceling UVA and UVB rays. Their product comes in two varieties, ‘tanning’ and ‘nontanning’.Theystate,thatharmonizedh2O UV Neutralizer tanning allows users to achieve a tan while being protected from harmful sun rays. We were very impressed with their claim and even more impressed, with the great reviews of their products on the web. The days of carrying a sunscreen bottle in our beach bag, might just be over. With the peace of mind of having our skin protected, we are left with much more to worry about. Like, having fun! Chatting Up Top Chef Fabio Viviani

By Nycole Sariol/Photo courtesy Siena Tavern Bravo’s Top Chef Season Five summoned some very distinguishable TV personalities to its screen, plashing that touch of drama necessary for any triumphant reality show dish. Though the claws were sharp and the fights were prevalent, there was but one who maintained his cool all the while – oddly enough – stirring the pot. The Italian chef, who wore a smile more than he wore an apron, Fabio Viviani, indubitably rendered that Italian fire that melted the hearts of many during season five Top Chef New York and Top Chef: Allstars. After nation-wide exposure on an Emmy Award winning show, it’s only natural that raved success ensues, right? Not for Fabio. For him, the show did not define his career as a chef. It merely gave him the tools to build future relationships with people whom he might not have otherwise. “My life is the same. It [Top Chef] just made it busier,” the chef told us right before he and newest restaurant, Siena Tavern snagged up the People’s Choice Award and Best Taste of Florida at the OBIES in Ft. Lauderdale. The devilishly charming chef, who has opened California hotspots like Café Firenze and Firenze Osteria and Siena Tavern in Chicago, no doubt holds the gold belt of encapsulating the perfect chef-restaurateur combo. But those aren’t his only accolades gaining him colossal recognition. On top of multiple and expanding restaurants in the works, Viviani also has the bragging rights to some handy cookbooks like the New York Times Best-Seller, Fabio’s Italian Kitchen and another due out later this year, following the vibe of the former. Like any good, homegrown Italian boy, raised on a nice glass of Chianti instead of a tall glass of warm milk, Viviani is expected to launch his first line of wine. “We love to drink, but we wanted to create a product that people are passionate about,” he says. Apart from the launch of his anticipated wine line and the sequel to his best-selling cookbook, it’s the opening of Siena Tavern Miami that breaks the cooking catalyst’s chart-topping news. The sister restaurant to his Chicago location, is set to open fall of this year in South Beach’s old China Grill, between Washington Avenue and 5th. Viviani says to expect loads of color and, of course, fashion, because what’s a Miami restaurant without the duet?  With so many whirl-winding ventures teeming around him, how does this guy find the time for a little shut-eye? “I don’t. I gave it up a while ago,” chuckles the Top Chef’s favorite season five contestant. But in a city that welcomes sleepless nights, we expect he and his insomnia will fit in just fine here on Miami’s shores. Click here to view post on the July/August 2014 issue.

Danila Sigal – “Never Give Power to Illness”

“Never Give Power to Illness”  Photographed by Imani Ogden  Tell us about your book “My Four Season” ? Actually the book unfolds from my personal journal, which I started writing as a kid documenting memories, feelings, experiences, etc. Once an adult, and given a sudden and unexpected breast cancer diagnosis, I decided to transform the diary into a structured narration I could potentially share with family, friends and anyone in search for a testimony with which they could identify and draw learning for their own benefit. For instance in the book I depict the importance of the “coincidences” or “signs” life flashes right in front our eyes, but sometimes we ignore; like the time when someone gave me a business card of a surgeon, to which I paid zero attention to and misplaced it in some drawer, and who more than a year later, ended up being the one person who resolved my reconstruction ordeal. What is the meaning behind your book title? The title derives from the number 4, which has been present in my life a lot! We are four sisters, four very close friends, and my family nucleus also consists of my two kids, my husband, and myself. I basically associated each season with the personality of the people in my life, with the understanding that all seasons are necessary, they each bring their unique contribution to our existence, and complement each other. Additionally, in line with what I told you earlier about my dad exposing me to all the classical masterpieces, I love Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, so this music accompanied me as inspiration while I wrote the book. Why did you decide to write the memoir? Well, when suddenly we are faced with a diagnosis of a death sentence,I think those are the moments we put everything else into perspective. My kids were quite small back then, I wasn’t sure for how long I would be around. I felt this urge to leave primarily to my kids, some kind of written record about my background, the life lessons centered in the importance of giving and receiving love, the moral values my parents had taught me, the anecdotic stories about family, friends, my work environment, plus of course dedicating a couple of chapters specifically to how I faced the illness, which I am still battling as we speak. What is your advice to other women or men who are going through the same thing you are? My advice is to never give power to the illness. Our mind and emotions have to be focused at forming a vision of ourselves in perfect health. No matter what the medical reports say, we must learn to change the channel and stop the chatterbox in our brain that distracts us from our purpose. Yes, we must listen and respect our doctors’ recommendations, and bless them every day for the wonderful work they do. But we have our own role to play in the healing process, we must take ownership of it, by choosing our thoughts well, as these manifest in our life; and focusing on the people we love, on doing the things we treasure, in living our present as a gift, and in enjoying as much as possible each instant of our day-to-day (listen to my song “Vive Hoy”). I tried to ensure I would continue pursuing my dreams and personal projects with the same enthusiasm as always, regardless of the hardship I was facing, which kept me grounded and motivated. How long have you been writing music? Well as a kid, probably about 8 yearsold, I first started to role-play a game as if I had my own radio show, wow, I had such a blast! I would spend literally hours in my room, recording shows, where I played all the roles: the interviewer, the guest interviewee, the artist who had to sing, I even acted the commercial breaks!! So primarily motivated by my dad who would hear me sing in my room (OMG attempting to imitate so many famous artists!) he said “Dani, you love to write, you love music, you like to sing, you have a great ear, why don’t you start writing songs” ? My dad was that kind of person that even if you were not that great, he would make you feel great! So that is when, while other kids were playing in the park, I was sitting at home with my dad learning the names of the classical concerts, or identifying the instruments being performed by an orchestra!! Gradually he taught me to appreciate music in all of its forms, and pushed me to express myself through it, first by writing the lyrics, and then by creating a melody that would properly fit into the feeling I wished to convey. I studied piano for a couple of years, and then for the turns of life, I ended up with a degree in Business and pursuing a corporate career which I enjoyed; but once faced with the cancer episode, I decided to awaken my creative right-brain, and as continuation to the book, I began developing a multi-genre repertoire of inspirational prototypes consisting of both lyrics and melodies, that later I produced with a superb team, under the baton of a good friend and musician Carlos Escalona and of course, with the vocal grandeur of my talented nephew Johnny Sigal. What inspired you to write and sing “Stand Up”, one of the songs in Johnny Sigal’s new album Testimonio? The song Stand Up, I wrote inspired by a few other cancer patients I met during my chemo treatments, some which unfortunately lost the battle. It represents for me a hymn to life, a chant to motivate mankind to taking a more proactive role in being kinder to each other, in identifying ways to help and be a positive role model that our youth can emulate. It is a tribute in praise of our human nature, which is meant to shed light and love as much as we

Miami Real Estyle – Sofia Joelsson – SoJo Design Miami Beach

By Sherri Balefsky/Photography by Imani Ogden Stepping into the SoJo Design offices in the heart of South Beach is like stepping onto an oasis during a major MacArthur Causeway traffic jam. Sofia Joelsson, the firm’s founder and creative director, arrived in Miami late last night after her flight from New York was delayed four hours. You’d never know; she is blithe and cheerful and—with no makeup, nonetheless—looks incredibly well rested. From just a quick glance around her office, it is clear Joelsson has impeccable taste—so much so you’d think she spent years studying at an accredited design school. But Joelsson grew up in a small town in Sweden where she reveals, “People are very much do-it-yourself. A career in interior design is not something that is really even thought of.” Instead, the former Miss Sweden grew up thinking she wanted to be an actress. She spent time living in Germany and the Dominican Republic before making her way to Miami. “I was modeling and doing commercials,” she says. “But people kept asking me who my decorator was…So thirteen years ago—to this day, actually [June 9, 2014]—I started SoJo Design.”  With no formal training, Joelsson has managed to make a name for herself in the world of interior design, having worked on some of the most impressive luxury properties in Miami, New York City, and Dallas, Texas, among others. This includes penthouses at the Setai, Il Villagio, and 1500 Ocean Drive in South Beach; the Ritz-Carlton, Dallas; and Manhattan’s Walker Tower (where a penthouse recently sold for a reported $30 million). “I found a niche in penthouses,” she says. But her portfolio also includes luxury condominiums at Canyon Ranch, Miami Beach, One Bal Harbor, and the Four Seasons, Miami, and multimillion-dollar estates in affluent neighborhoods in places like Star Island and the Hamptons. She’s also designed interiors for hotels, office buildings, restaurants, and even private jets. The SoJo Design aesthetic is sleek, chic, and modern. Each room exudes an effortless balance of color, texture, shape, and open space. Joelsson has an affinity for natural materials like wood, stone, and leather, and for neutral tones such as white, black, and beige. While an estate she designed in Dallas has a much different vibe than, say, one of her South Beach penthouses, the signature SoJo je ne sais quoi permeates throughout each endeavor. In total, SoJo Design has worked on more than 150 projects, representing close to a billion dollars of real estate. The success has led Joelsson to expand her business into other areas of creativity, which includes the launch of a design-inspired magazine, Curated Living. “I did [the magazine] to challenge and inspire myself, and in turn, inspire others,” she says. “It was originally only supposed to be online [www.curated-living.com], but my clients and advertisers were all asking for copies.” For the first issue, aptly named “The White Issue,” Joelsson curated pieces from her favorite design and fashion houses to put together a series of white-themed vignettes. The next issue, slated for Summer 2014, will have both equestrian and nautical themes. Along with being editor-in-chief of a burgeoning magazine, Joelsson is working on a new textiles line, which she anticipates will be part of a larger Sofia Joelsson Home, Anywhere collection. She also launched an e-commerce site, Cudesso (www.cudesso.com), which offers a handpicked selection of her favorite furniture and home accessories from around the world. And, if that wasn’t enough, Joelsson is also in talks with producers about a potential TV show. With so many projects evolving simultaneously, it’s no wonder Joelsson says the one person she’d love to meet is Martha Stewart. “She is such an inspiring entrepreneur and businesswoman—and she’s had a very interesting life!” Much of Joelsson’s inspiration comes from travel. Her favorite places include Mykonos and Santorini, Greece; and Capri, Italy, where she says she visits every year. Aside from traveling, in her free time (though it would seem she has none!), Joelsson loves to entertain. She likes having friends over to watch movies on her terrace where she has a full-size chess set and a popcorn machine. “A lot of my friends have kids,” she confesses. “I have four-legged kids.”  She gushes about her shih-tzu mix, Caspar, whom she rescued five years ago. He is by her side at the office on most days. “I think it’s important to create a fun work environment,” she says. “We’re here very long hours some days, so you have to keep people loving what they do.” The SoJo Design team currently includes five designers, plus an extended staff that helps support her in her multiple endeavors.  And despite her laundry list of accomplishments in just 13 years, Joelsson remains down-to-earth and remarkably humble. “The United States is still, to me, the land of opportunity,” she says.“Miami is special because it’s only something like thirty percent developed—as opposed to New York, which is like ninety-nine percent developed. There’s so much opportunity and growth…What Craig Robins is doing with the Design District is pretty incredible. It’s cool to be a part of a growing design community.”  So what’s her best piece of advice for anyone who wants to follow in her footsteps? “Follow your passion. Everything else is just passing the time. [Your passion] can change—mine did. But if you love what you do, you will be successful.” Click here to view post on the July/August 2014 issue.

Top Recruiter Miami Is Big Business

DOWN TO BUSINESS WITH CREATIVE DIRECTOR & EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CHRIS LAVOIE What is your position within the show Top Recruiter? I am the Creator & Executive Producer of the show. What is the show Top Recruiter about? Top Recruiter is a reality series – where 6 recruiters come together and take on a series of challenges based on the job market. We aim to showcase the process of what happens behind the scenes of a recruiters job. Through that process, we want to give job seekers some insight and tricks of the trade so they may implement some in their job hunting endeavors. Plus there’s great drama between these huge personalities. What category does Top Recruiter fall under in reality TV, is it a planned or a followed story? I am a big fan of the “unexpected”! This is the reason why we have no script on set. As the executive producer, I read the human behavior on set and develop the day’s filming format. How did you come up with the idea of Top Recruiter? The idea of Top Recruiter was born in the dawn of the recession. We realized then, like many people did, that things were about to change- quickly. We also realized that while many people were losing their jobs and homes, there were other opportunities as a direct result of this recession. We knew that many people simply did not have the inside knowledge that a recruiter has. We wanted to deliver this information in a way that was entertaining so that people would watch and learn and hopefully apply the information to their situation and thrive. There was so much doom and gloom hovering over us as a country that we really felt something should be done. I have always had a passion for film, I just took my two passions and married them. What’s the process of casting your stars? 1. The single most important characteristic is knowledge base. For us, we want the show to be credible. We want to educate and only people with real expertise can really do that, right? 2. Secondly, this is a show – and shows need to be entertaining to keep any attention by the viewer. So we look for bold personalities who don’t cringe at the sight of a camera. They simply need to be comfortable in front of the camera, not everyone can do that. 3. Confidence, Confidence, Confidence!! What job markets do Top Recruiters target? EVERY Industry. What are your Top Recruiters competing for amongst each other? The “reputation” of being the world’s best. Every winner has seen a tremendous elevation in their career and personal brand. Once a winner is selected what is the Grand Prize? A dinner with me. Did I just say that?! Seriously, they win something pretty – Job Security They really could work at any Fortune 500 company if they wanted to. Just as long as they still perform to their abilities. Has Top Recruiter Miami achieved the success you were hoping for? We couldn’t be happier with the achievements of Top Recruiter. We set out to help a very important industry at a very important time in our country’s history. We feel that we helped shed some light on how to get ourselves out of a rut. There have been a number of publications that have been written about the show, and in them, I find the meaning of success. What inspires you the most in making your business decisions? As I turn 40 years old, I want to work on projects that make sense in 2 areas. One, it needs to “move” me. I need to be “turned” on. There needs to be a “risk” factor. Secondly, it needs to make sense financially. Since I will be working 95% of the time raising the funds for each reality series or film I am working on – I need to see that my time is valued. I perform at a high standard and expect nothing less. Do you have any plans for other reality shows in the near future? Yes, I am working on raising funds for Social Media Stars Reality Series.
