TANYA-MARIE

TANYA-MARIE captivated the crowd at the Art Basel ELEMENTS event in Wynwood’s Miami Art Space on Thursday, December 1st. Guests sipped on a full-bodied cabernet, graciously provided by YaYa (www.yayawines.com), which perfectly set the tone for the show to come. Through the glass doors onlookers could see an excited Tanya-Marie filing beautiful, leggy models in a variety of footwear—from classic nude pumps to over-the-knee stiletto boots—into line for the show. Then, as lights came up and music came on, her models paraded through spectators, one by one, cloaked in an air of whimsy with a leather-corseted edge. As each girl strutted down the blue runway (blue, in keeping with Souza’s “Just Add Water” collection also housed at MAS), the crowd “oohed” and “ahhh-ed” over each piece.  From matching pants and tops to full-length formal gowns, the collection offered something for everyone. I was not alone in my admiration for the designer whose ability to thread together such a variety of fabrics left everyone with visions of Cavalli, Galliano, and even D&G. Fortunately, as I am one whose curiosity can’t wait, I got the chance to steal Tanya-Marie away from the ever-ensuing waves of praise and applause to ask her a few questions about her creative and ultra diverse collection: RL: “Talk to me about inspiration,” I said. “This collection is so diverse! How do you make it all come together so seamlessly?” T-M: “For me it’s about vintage fabrics and remnant fabrics—I travel a lot; I go to different countries and then I’ll buy the indigenous fabrics to work with¬¬— its the fabric that inspires me…” RL: “I love that answer. I really appreciate a designer who lets the fabric speak and move. Do you find that your collections follow any sort of trend or are you the trend-setter?” T-M: “I’m definitely not trendy—I am my own trend…I love anything animal print, I love anything that moves—anything fabulous.” RL: “So its safe to say you kind of design for you, then, in that sense.” T-M: “Yes—of course I do the gowns—I do those, but with a sort of sexy fitted flavor—” RL: “And they move so well—that’s what I noticed—” T-M: “Yeah, my who thing is how they flow and fit…and the fabric. Ha! That’s good, the “Three F’s!” RL: “Absolutely, I think that’s a perfect way to describe your collection.” And it was; the best way to sum up this collection is, indeed, “Fit, Flow, Fabric.” You can find this collection and many more at her store at The Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables or online at www.tanyamariedesign.com By Reagan Lightsey Photo by Jim Winters

La Collaborazione

NOEL & UBERTO GUCCI By Reagan Lightsey Photo by Henry Perez     After first seeing Miami artist Noel’s dramatic images that seem to jump right off the canvas, it is no wonder that Uberto Gucci – of the famed fashion family of the same name – decided to collaborate with him in creating “La Collaborazione”: an unprecedented event that premiered on November 17th. The exhibit, held at the newly renovated Miami Beach Botanical Garden, was followed by a reception at the Raleigh Hotel. The first two paintings of La Collaborazione, were unveiled by Noel and Uberto Gucci during Noel’s 2010 Mediterranean exhibits. “I wanted to concentrate in the origins of the Gucci family,” said Noel of the collection. “That’s why I decided to pay homage to their original equestrian designs and the family’s love for horses -which it was what they started designing before it became a major fashion house.” Not only did Noel focus on the original concept of the fashion house as a whole, but he also concentrated on the foundation of the Gucci family’s birthplace, Florence, Italy.  “Of course, because they are originally from Florence, I was inspired by it, as well, since it is the birthplace of the Renaissance,” said Noel. “I mixed my style – the classical element that it already has with the foundation of the family’s design of everything equestrian.” By weaving authentic scarves, leather and horse bits that were originally used as accessories for the riders (granted to him straight from the Gucci family archives!) into his work, Noel certainly captured the air of sophistication that accompanies the family name. “My work is known for its dimension and movement,” explained Noel, “which is why it was easy to add the actual 3D elements into it…I used the scarves to create a cohesive scene with the whole collection…The elements on the paintings are directly from the original accessories made by the Gucci family.” Truly, the seamless incorporation of these renowned pieces provided by Uberto Gucci is something to behold.  If fashion, is indeed, wearable art, then this collection is certainly a celebration of the two worlds colliding.

AN EVENING WITH JOSIE NATORI

By Sandra Mateu Photo by Anthony Garcia On the second floor of Saks Fifth Avenue at Dadeland Mall, women dressed in beautiful deep purple attires offer samples of a delightful fragrance. A stunning display with orchids and black bamboos compliment the Eastern influenced designs set on the mannequins. Exquisite champagne and savory appetizers go around in silver trays. People of different ages approach Sak’s staff asking where tonight’s host is. She finally arrives and she is wearing one of her modern and feminine designs; A black and white top with a coordinating wrap and a black pencil skirt, a sensual and elegant pair of stilettos and a bold pair of black earrings. She is delighted by the ocassion; she is happy to greet everybody; she is going to show Miami the Natori Fall Ready to Wear collection 2011. Josie Natori is a Filipina designer who started her journey in the fashion industry with an embroidered blouse, which was adapted into a sleep shirt. Lingerie and sleepwear expanded into home textiles, accessories, bath, fragrance, eyewear, swim and ready-to-wear maintaining Natori’s philosophy of bringing art into life. With a glass of water in her hand and a big smile on her face, Josie Natori sat surrounded by her wonderful pieces with Miami Shoot Magazine to share her thoughts.”I design for women all around the world. I am the biggest fan of women. A woman can do anything she sets her mind to. I’m just here to make the process easier,” said Natori. Josie designs pieces that make the transition from day into night simpler. Her clothes are versatile guaranteeing variety in the female wardrobe. They are also extremely comfortable. “I don’t believe in suffering. I come from the corporate world and I know what it means to be nicely dressed at all times and to go from the office to dinner and to important meetings. I know the necessities that women have and I want to be there for them, creating pieces that are extremely useful in their lives and that make them look wonderful,” expressed Natori. Josie is a woman who fervently believes on giving back. She is part of several boards that support many different causes such as women, music, art, and fashion. At this event, Josie and Saks Fifth Avenue supported the Commonwealth Institute donating 10% of all sales in two days to this non-profit organization. The Commonwealth is a group that helps women entrepreneurs, CEOs, and senior corporate executives achieve success in their businesses. They are established in Massachusetts and South Florida and they help women through membership, educational seminars, topic-specific programming, and signature events (www.commonwealthinstitute.com). Another of Natori’s initiatives has been donating $1 for every Bra Finder App download to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation this past October. The Bra Finder is an application on smart phones when looking for the perfect Natori bra for you. Saks Fifth Avenue’s clientele and Commonwealth’s CEOs had the chance to meet Josie and be advised on fashion matters while beautiful models showed the crowd the latest items of Natori’s collection. One of the best pieces of the night was her black and red silk Arata dress with a Mayumi Wool Cocoon Sweater. The elegance and glamour of the designs wowed the audience who enjoyed of a wonderful afternoon accompanied by great music and amazing company in Miami, Florida.
