365 Days of Summer

By Monica Guessous Summertime, the season of sun kissed skin, golden hair, icy drinks and dinner on the boardwalk. Wonderful memories are created during the hot summer months. We become one with nature, and try to enjoy everything the summer has to offer. Miami, of all places, should be the definition of summer. We are blessed with 365 days of sunshine, along with beautiful beaches, delicious food and wonderful people. However, having the sun on our side all year around, leaves us vulnerable to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. These rays are the cause of premature aging of the skin, dark spots, deep wrinkles and even skin cancer can happen over time. So how do we care for and protect our skin from our dear friend and skin’s enemy the Miami sun? Understanding the effect of the UVA and UVB rays on our skin, will help us understand and protect it from further damage, it’s never too late to start. UVA rays, enter the skins deepest layer called Dermis, they are the causes of premature aging of the skin. UVB rays cause skin cancer, sun allergies and sunburn, because they penetrate the upper layer of the skin (epidermis). Protecting our skin is a must, and sunscreen is our skin’s best friend. However, not all sunscreens are created equal. Cosmetics companies are constantly searching for new ways to improve their formula. One company in particular is challenging the traditional idea of sunscreen, by creating a drinkable sunscreen. Impressive! But does it work? Harmonized h2o UV Neutralizer, is the world’s first drinkable sunscreen. The company claims, drinking one teaspoon of Harmonized H2O UV neutralizer will give wearers a factor 30 protection. They go on by explaining, that their product works by molecules vibrating on skin, canceling UVA and UVB rays. Their product comes in two varieties, ‘tanning’ and ‘nontanning’.Theystate,thatharmonizedh2O UV Neutralizer tanning allows users to achieve a tan while being protected from harmful sun rays. We were very impressed with their claim and even more impressed, with the great reviews of their products on the web. The days of carrying a sunscreen bottle in our beach bag, might just be over. With the peace of mind of having our skin protected, we are left with much more to worry about. Like, having fun! Q&A with Cindy Barshop, founder and owner of Completely Bare

Interviewed by Samantha Marie, Lifestyle Editor Photo’s courtesy of Siren Public Relations, Inc. MSM gets the facts from Cindy Barshop, founder and owner of Completely Bare… SM: Is it necessary to hire a licensed esthetician for waxing, or is this something that anyone can do themselves at home? CB: It’s not necessary to hire a licensed esthetician if you have great quality products at home. For those who prefer to wax at home, Completely Bare’s Salon Quality Bikini and Body Wax Kit, Salon Quality Face & Other Sensitive Areas Wax Kit and Hypo Allergenic Wax Strips for Face, Bikini, Body help to achieve wonderful results and are the same high-end, result-oriented quality wax used in my New York spas.  If you are going to a spa, make sure the aestheticians there are licensed; if you are paying someone for a service they should have the proper credentials and deliver stellar results. SM: What are some of the pros and cons of waxing, shaving, and laser hair removal? CB: First and foremost, your preferred method of waxing, shaving and/or laser hair removal really depends on the person. Some of the pros of waxing include: – An immediate result – It’s not as expensive – Can wax either in the convenience of your home or at a spa The cons of waxing include: – It’s more painful – Ingrown hairs are possible – Have to wait for it to grow back before waxing again – You have to wax for the rest of your life The pros of laser include: – Gets rid of it forever – Rejunvates skin in area – No irritation – At some point, you begin to save money – You’re forever hair-free – Great for coarse, dark skin – Great if certain parts of hair on your body affect your everyday life Some of the cons of laser include: – It’s more expensive, as it’s a larger up-front cost – Cant have a fresh suntan; you need to wait two weeks before going for your laser appointment Some of the pros of shaving include: – Fast results – It’s inexpensive The cons of shaving include: – It can grow back faster and thicker – Can lead to ingrown hairs SM: How long must the hair length be before you can wax your legs, under arms, bikini area, etc..? CB: I would advise for hair to be 1/4 inches long before waxing any area of the body.   About Completely Bare: Founded on Madison Avenue, New York City over ten years ago by hair removal expert Cindy Barshop, the single spa in NYC has grown into a national success. WINTER SKIN PROTECTION

1. Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser and WARM water. A hot shower may feel great during the cold temperatures, but it will destroy the top layer of your skin that helps retain moisture and will dry out your skin even faster. Stay away from soaps that have strong antibacterial ingredients and deodorants that contain skin irritating ingredients. 2. Modify your facial skin care routine by skipping the toners and astringents. These products are for drying out excess oils in the skin and may dry you out further during the winter. Use sparingly in case you do need it. 3. With cold windy dry air and hot heat pounding at your skin daily, moisture is continuously being pulled. Apply moisturizer frequently throughout the day as often as your skin feels tight and dry. 4. Do not ditch your sun protection just because the days are shorter. Using an SPF is important no matter what time of year it is. Use a minimal SPF of 15 to ensure sun protection and re-apply every 1-2 hours. 5. Exfoliating will help clear skin of dead dry cells that build up on your skin’s surface. This will help keep your skin smooth and promote new skin growth. Be sure not to over exfoliate this can damage the new cell growth and decrease the potency of your moisturizer. 6. Don’t forget that your lips have skin too. Exfoliate your pout with a yummy sugar scrub and follow up with a moisturizing lip balm.

Summer Beauty Secrets

By Samantha Marie Summer Issue 2012       I encourage you to always have products with SPF accessible, even when you go outside to the mailbox. I’d often neglect to wear sunscreen, because I developed irritation from products containing fragrance, and high amounts of alcohol. It is very difficult to find skin care products that are suitable for ultra sensitive skin. Once I discovered a few products that worked well with my skin type, it made a huge difference overall. I find my skin is more radiant and smooth. How often do you wear sunscreen? Is your answer, sometimes? or never? The following text, provided by various sources, explains the importance of wearing sun screen. According to the CDC : Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The two most common types of skin cancer—basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas—are highly curable. However, melanoma, the third most common skin cancer, is more dangerous. About 65%–90% of melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. What is  Ultraviolet (UV) Light?  UV Rays are an invisible kind of radiation that comes from the sun, tanning beds, and sunlamps. UV rays can penetrate and change skin cells. I can assure you this piece of information is more than enough to convince me to wear SUNSCREEN! Here is some great advice provided by Lawrence Gibson, M.D., a dermatologist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. •Avoid the sun during peak hours. Generally, this is between 10 a.m and 4 p.m. — regardless of season. These are prime hours for exposure to skin-damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, even on overcast days. •Wear protective clothing. This includes pants, shirts with long sleeves, and sunglasses. Top it off with a wide-brimmed hat. In addition, consider investing in special sun-protective clothing for golf, gardening, walking, running — even swimming. •Use sunscreen. Liberal use of sunscreen is a key part of any program to protect yourself from the sun. •Apply generous amounts of sunscreen to dry skin 30 minutes before you go outdoors. •Use sunscreen on all skin surfaces that will be exposed to sun — especially your face, ears, hands, arms and lips. If you don’t have much hair on your head, apply sunscreen to the top of your head or wear a hat. •Coat your skin well and rub sunscreen in thoroughly. •Reapply sunscreen every two hours — more often if you’re perspiring. •Reapply sunscreen immediately after swimming. •Remember that sand, water and snow reflect sunlight and make it even more important to use sunscreen. •Since UVA rays penetrate glass and clouds, use sunscreen even when it’s cloudy or you’re indoors but in rooms with lots of windows. To understand more about sunscreen options please visit the following link: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/best-sunscreen/MY01350 Here is a list of sunscreen products that I use regularly containing SPF: • EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 – This product is Noncomedogenic, paraben-free, fragrance-free and sensitivity-free. What I love most about this product is it calms and protects sensitive, acne-prone skin. It is a very lightweight, oil-free formula leaves no residue on skin’s surface, and you can wear it under makeup. I encourage models to apply this product prior to photoshoots. I find my skin is less irritated after the application of makeup products used at shoots when I apply this product. The product creates a barrier between your skin and the makeup products, that will reduce the intensity of any irritation or break outs from miscellaneous makeup products. •NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment This product comes in a variety of shades, so you can choose one that is practically invisible, one that offers subtle hint of color, or one that will enhance any lip color you put on underneath. I try often to use this underneath and on top of colors makeup artists apply to my lips during photo shoots, because of its super moisturizing benefits. Certain lip liners and lip stains/sticks can cause your lips to become dry and chapped.  Vitamin E is infused in the lip treatment, polar berries and açai oil to provide antioxidants and long-lasting hydration; A great product to use after applications of harsh products. • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 45 This product is great for those with sensitive skin because it is waterproof, sweatproof, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), and oil-free. I mist this on my legs, arms, shoulders, and neck every day. Even if I am only driving in my car, I still spray any part of my upper body that is exposed. The uv rays will penetrate right through the car window, even windows that are tinted. The product features Helioplex®, that provides superior balanced broad-spectrum protection against UVA-aging and UVB-burning rays in an ultra-light. The non-greasy finish is another reason why I prefer using this product, especially when I spray it on my arms, and hands. I would love to hear from you! If you want to ask about any products or share your experiences with new products, send an email to: mail@samanthaspage.com

SAVING FACE

By Samantha Marie Do you find it difficult to maintain a healthy glow? It is definitely not easy, but it is certainly not too difficult or impossible! We have examined the causes of dry skin and acne according to the following sources: Mayo Clinic/MedlinePlus. After reviewing our sources we have created a list of products suitable for your individual needs.   Causes of dry skin according to the Mayo Clinic: •  Harsh soaps and detergents. Many popular soaps and detergents strip lipids and water from your skin. Deodorant and antibacterial soaps are usually the most damaging, as are many shampoos that dry out your scalp. •  Sun exposure. Like all types of heat, the sun dries your skin. Yet damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation penetrates far beyond the top layer of skin (epidermis). The most significant damage occurs deep in the dermis, where collagen and elastin fibers break down much more quickly than they should, leading to deep wrinkles and loose, sagging skin (solar elastosis). Sun-damaged skin may have the appearance of dry skin. Causes of acne according to MedlinePlus: •  Greasy or oily cosmetic and hair products •  Certain drugs (such as steroids, testosterone, estrogen, and phenytoin) •  High levels of humidity and sweating http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/acne/DS00169/DSECTION=symptoms Medline http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000873.htm FACIAL MOISTURIZERS ACNE PRONE SKIN: Cetaphil® DERMACONTROL™ Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30 http://www.cetaphil.com/products/dermacontrol-oil-control-moisturizer-spf30/ Oily Skin: Boscia Oil-free Daily Hydration SPF15 Dry Skin: Boscia – Restorative Day Moisture Cream SPF15 http://www.bosciaskincare.com/newsite/product_detail.php?cPath=0&products_id=101&category=&dept_id=42 BLOTTING PADS Shiseido PURENESS Oil-Control Blotting Paper FACIAL CLEANSERS ACNE PRONE SKIN: Cetaphil® DERMACONTROL™ Oil Control Foam Wash Oily Skin: Clinique Wash-Away Gel Clensor Dry Skin: Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser
